These people should have been rounded up while they were all there in one spot and dropped off where they are happier. Lucky they were a minority of a minoroty - so pretty small - dont know why the media give them any air time as they do nothing for their cause and create division, but they will NEVER be happy no matter what. Gladly most today including the majority of their own celebrated Australia Day. Move forward together FFS and this country will be even better!

Yep agree SD...those bloody protesters were almost as bad as someone on here wishing certain WAFL footballers would rip their hamstrings from the bone.

Ark, regards Abbott, I could never respect a bloke who wears budgie smugglers and/or dishes out knighthoods in a so-called egalitarian society.

Those were colloquial statements in regards to Ca$hiacos continual rogue and suspicious salary & recruitment conduct. But that is for other threads that have zero relevance to this one :)

AD: where your right is that, the ALP, as you know, oppossed all awards not just knighthoods on the ground of egalitarianism, as you said. That is why Keating has ner acceptted an honour. Given those, facts why is an OA alright and a knighthood wrong?

Knighthoods, if you are going to have them, should go to everyday Australians, including the Australian of the Year, not just soldiers and polliticians. People should remember that you are perfectly within your rights to say no to a knighthood or any oither award.

Ark, I think what irked me more was Abbott thinking he was the "bee's knees" by awarding Phil the Greek a knighthood.
I agree that these awards (OAs and the like) should go to everyday Australians; the good, old Aussie battlers who are not after formal recognition but are more interested in doing something to benefit society.

only Brazil and Argentina are even remotely comparable, at least historically, but today, as you know, they are failled states.

Now Jack, in relation to Abott, he knightted Phil the Greek on Australia Day to make the point that the country was British.

A few points, AR:

1. All the countries/continents you list were previously inhabited before the arrival of British colonialists. So while the UK exported some enduring positives, it wasn't out of the goodness of their hearts, and nor was it without cost to the "natives". And when you talk about the US (and other parts of the Americas), remember who it was that introduced, and continued slavery for many decades.

2. Brazil's and Argentina's GDPs are US$1.8T and US$550B respectively ie 9th and 21st in the world. In comparison, Australia is US$1.2T and 13th. They are hardly failed states.

3. If that was Abbott's point, he was both wrong, and he failed miserably (on so many levels).

jack: what do you reckon Australia's GDP would be comparred to Brazil if we had upwards of 200 million people?

The Dutch intoducced slavery into North America in 1619, so we can blame Holland for startting it, but, you ar right, the 'Dixicrats of the white south masterred the system.

Probably more relevant would be per capita :

Australia 13th
Argentina 63rd
Brazil 81st

Mcbob: very true, but that is why Jack has failled to rise to the occassion and answer my question. It is amazing the number of people on her whom can't grasp how productive America, Western Europe and Australia are comparred to the rest of the world.

Another example comparring the US and and the big girl's blouse, China

America has 300 million people with 25 percent of world GDP out put
China 1.3 thousand million with just 15 per cent.

Thanks for the post.
