With all due respect Baz, your first para sums it up .. "back then"

Pre covid the delays in elective surgery were nothing like they are now, several friends who are in the same mid-late 60's group as I and the bride have had knee and hip jobs done with very short wait periods with their choice of Quack due to being privately covered, yes, if you count the cost of premiums over the years it might cost just as much or more but I don't have $30k in my skyrocket to pay for such a procedure, and then wait 12 - 18 months and not get the consultant of my choice. Hip n Knee replacements are classed as elective surgery but ask someone who's been hobbling around in extreme pain for months or years and they may disagree with that assessment.

Did you guys getting hip replacements consult with a rheumatologist before getting your hip replacement? I was diagnosed with an auto immune disease called psoriatic arthritis back in 2013. The treatment is a low dose cancer drug that suppresses your immune system prevention swelling and deterioration of the joints. I’m now off that but on a more tailored drug specifically designed for this condition.

But my rheumatologist told me how they accidentally found out that methotrexate can cure joint pain in the hips. A patient who had already had one hip replacement and was booked in to have the other one done was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer. He was treated with methotrexate for his cancer and suddenly found his hip problems went away. They canceled the second hip replacement and said you probably didn’t need the first one.

Just thought I’d share that with you.

No mate...I had a body scan done prior to seeing the surgeon and my hip was so bad, it was beyond bone on bone, the hip ball joint was actually fused to the hip socket. My surgeon sent me photos of the joint after the op and he said it was one of the worst he'd seen so no medication was going to help me that's for sure.

Mate, I'm not that stuffed yet re - replacements.

But I do have wear and tear in the lower back - Osteo Arthiritis that gives a bit of pain and stiffness, not a lot that can be done about that I guess.

Daz I was told by an Australian doctor who told me he was quitting Australia along with his doctor wife for Canada where the entire hospital system is public, no private hospitals. I take it from that it is better funded. But the main reason for hospital ramping he said was too many nurses and doctors have been taken out of the nursing homes so they should be treating people in aged care but they were instead put into ambulances and shuffled off to a hospital bed. And the other reason he said was the huge increase in mental health patients.

He said working 85 hours a week catches up with you after a while. I take it he's going to work less hours for the around the same money in Canada. Here in Australia the federal government wants to syphon us all over to private hospital cover to take the problem off their hands. There's no way I could ever afford private hospital cover. I have had ancillaries cover with HIF for about 25 - 30 years.

Perhaps there is capacity if you combine all private and public hospitals but most of us can't afford private hospitals.
We have been in HBF for nearly 50 years.  We currently have top cover which has a lot of advantage along with costing a shipload of do re mi.  You might want to upgrade as you get into the oldies bracket DD…it’s paying off for me.  eg…nearly 50k to get both my knees replaced among other problems.
You would of paid for that ten times over in premiums over the 50 years.

Why bother you get it all free anyway, my parents never had private health insurance whole life, had a no end of free operations, heart by passes the lot, cost sfa.
Baz, there’s no doubt I would have paid for what I get over the years.  However, things like a Flying Doctor trip from the Pibaras to RPH for a 2 week hospital stay, my knees, a couple of crowns on my teeth, RA treatment…I could go on. I’ve had a few issues the last 3 years and it’s good to walk in, get fixed and walk out costing me nowt.  Some of the blokes here have also made some good points.  I guess it’s each to their own, but I like the feeling of peace of mind.

DD, I’ve been on methotrexate for many years for RA.  Not the nicest drug to be taking, but I have no pain in my foot whatever.

Hadn’t heard of that one. I googled it and it sounds like a pretty vicious drug.

Old liar liar pants on fire is at it again, I saw his lips move. This power tripping clown says one thing but does another. He is all over the place like a bull in a china shop.

Now he is backing away completely from the new mantra agreed by national cabinet and flagging harsher restrictions like going back to 2 or 4 sqm rules when the borders open up to "avoid high case loads" using his words.

The bloke is a fraud, firstly he went against the national pathway forward that was agreed to open borders at 80% fully vaxed, he says no we are going to wait for 90%, then he changes the age range from 16+ to 12+. Now even achieving all of that he wants to take us back to the harshest of times when there were 2 and 4 sqm rules.

You are a joke McGowan you really are.

DD, lying mmm not sure he has actually told a porky, (but quite happy to be PROVEN wrong) what he does is not follow the national cabinet policies but then the only state that has is NSW, not even Dan the Man has followed as blindly as Glagi and now the pink and gray!

The reason the national cabinet chnaged stuff was cos they are overloaded in the freed up states with testing and they hoping to some mythical deity that these changes will relieve the pressure on the pathology labs.

The only lie so this week is the Pasta's assertion that there is enough RPT's out there and guess what there ain't and they will not be out there until the second week of january, mmm 20k per and climbing. They maybe the lesser evil omicron but omicran can still cause damage to folk.
