good post lads -- there is nothing sad about any of it. In those days I used to know the numbers of every WAFL player by heart. The Daily News was very good on a Thursday afternoon with a great football section . In the Western Mail, I remember them reporting on Peter Bennett's fist and only game for the Lions.

Yeah Westside Football what a great newspaper that was, the bible to WAFL footy lovers in the 1980s.
The late Alan East and Peter Poat produced it from memory it had everything a footy fanatic could ask for a comprehensive wrap of all WAFL grades, plus Sunday League, Amateurs, Country and Junior Footy in WA plus some VFL & SANFL snippets and the National Scoreboard.
The player ratings every game out of 10 was a favourite along with "The Hood", reading back years later and in hindsight 'Mr Rumours' Gary Carvolth was rarely right with any of his 'hot gossip'!!

Yes they certainly did AR Eileen 'Mother' Brown (Malcolm Gregory's mother) had a regular column as did the likes of Dennis Cometti, Robert 'Beat Up' Bennett, Gary Carvolth, Grant Dorrington, Chubby Stiles, Ian Miller etc over the years.
Interestingly to look back on the likes of Tim Worner (ex 7/West CEO), Gary Stocks, Tania Armstrong, Kim Hagdorn etc got their start in the media with Westside Footy so bouquets to them for that although in the case of Hagdorn maybe it should be a brickbat! :silly:

yep great posts, I remember getting off the bus on and around Cantonment St in Fremantle and making sure I was getting the late afternoon edition of the Daily News. From a WAFL reporting perspective you would only make the mistake of getting the early edition once.

Great reporting on all WAFL games then - when I started work full time in the late 80's I would still make a point of grabbing after work until it sadly went under.

The great shame for me Oooll was that the Daily News and Western Mail (my 2 favourite newspapers for sport) went under whilst The West (3rd in a 3 horse race) survived!

Not a chance they will ever get a subscription out of me - the NT News leaves them for dead, the old Truth newspaper also.

Deduct Rea,and Washfold. Perth recruited them from other WAFL clubs as was Stephen Mount.
Was Brett Yorgey from Sydney?

I think Bevan was from NSW Smokey thats why I didnt include him but yes you are right Rea & Washfold were recruited from Vic by WP before heading to Lathlain Park.
Cooper & McCorkell were both good players for Perth for only the one season unfortunately, probably can add the likes of White, Graham, Ferguson, Carlyle, Wilson, Burgiel etc

You’re good BH but just pick you up on one thing. Jarrod Kayler-Thompson was recruited by Perth and played most of his footy at Perth. I think he only managed one season with Subi before injuries ended his time.

One of the best recruits to come to WA from interstate would have to be David Palm. I thought for a moment can’t believe you left him out of WP’s list but then remember he came from Norwood in SA to WP before being picked up by Richmond and doing well there.

Can’t think of his name but wore bright red boots, played for Essendon, came to Perth for a few years. Played under McMahon unfortunately. Was he a Victorian or originally from Peel?
Get on your bike.
It was Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.

Kyle Reimers DD. He only played the one season with us and then went back to Melbourne I believe.
Originally from Peel.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog.
