Article in todays west about the SANFL move to protect their traditional teams by adding restrictions to the two aligned teams, Port and the Crows reserves. Non AFL listed players can be no older than 23 and can only be on 1 year contracts. Like the Crows, Port will have no district to draw players from and cannot recruit from proper SANFL clubs zones to top up so would have to do that from 3rd tier comps.

Interesting to note that the Royal Eagles has 10 non listed players over 23 in the 2nd semi. These changes all make complete sense as it removes the situation where the aligned teams can dominate, remember, these alignments are purely for the AFL teams benefit so all their spare listed players can play together under one coaching regime, the alignment isn't supposed to create monsters that overwhelm the traditional teams, so we would have 2 teams equivalent in standard to the current Peel Dockers, competing hard and winning a handful of games while not totally distorting the comp.

Unfortunately comment from the WAFC is that they are not looking at these sorts of changes. G7 clubs are behind the SANFL moves plus pressure to substantially cut the salary cap for the 2 aligned teams.

One could be forgiven for thinking that faced with proposed changes like this the Royal Eagles will sandbag the exhibition game to preserve their protected position ....... just a thought.

Instead of turning the aligned teams into AFL reserves in everything but name how about they just give them their own teams like they wanted and end the constant complaining.

Give Peel to Freo, give WCE their own team. 10 team league, 8 team reserves/colts with 8 zones.

YES YES & YES.

PLEASE
PLEASE
PLEASE!!!

This is the only way, exactly how SA have done it.
How the WAFC claim they cant fix this immediately, is a joke.

Spot on Barney plus two different comps.

The WAFL with the traditional eight playing.

The BHP cup with the lot of them.
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

Fair comment Barney but what would become of East Perth. The reason given for taking on the alignment was that they were a financial basket case and needed the Weags money/structure to survive?

Was that a porky to justify the decision to sell out or will Bronte come to the rescue once again?

If EP were truly a basket case, with all the decent sponsorship, the AHG support, the half decent membership & supporter base by todays standards, and the other advantage of a ground share & halved general ground costs, they must be doing a lot wrong if clubs like Claremont can find a way to keep going with half of what we have.

Id rather have EP back as EP thanks. With all the rough edges, the on field mistakes and frustrations, the occasional gutsy wins against the odds, and the struggles that made us a football club. But as Im told regularly, Im living in the past and out of touch. No problem maybe I am, or I guess my whole family is because none of them hardly mention the EP now. And every Sunday we have all the kids over for dinner, and the topic was generally EP & footy. That has all gone very flat now. Its quite bizzare considering the way the clan used to be.

I miss emptying & cleaning my thermos on those Saturday evenings. The thing has been stagnant in the cupboard for bloody 12 months now.

If they can't survive they die. It does satisfy Brontes vision of 8 teams so each team gets bigger dividend and share of sponsorship revenue.

Don't need two comps tfaf. Just set up the two teams like the Crows reserves team has been set up. The two teams will not dominate, it will be like Peel now.

Barney i have been pushing this idea for ages but some g7 people think they own the players after being drafted.I think it would be the fairest thing for all 8 traditional clubs if afl players played with eagles/dockers stand alone teams.get rid of peel and the bye as well.more money if we don't have to prop up peel.

Jardine having some knowledge of the actual financial position as of pre season 2013 I can see why the alignment was pursued. Without another immediate injection of massive dollars it was shut the doors time. Complete mis management is the cause of the situation and trying to buy success in a competition that is completely skewed towards a few teams. We should have just done a Perth lived within our means and just be happy to exist. East Perth will never recover from this and neither will the league.
