EP and Peel - no due to them already being set up and aligned. Leaves 7.

Subi will not be one of them due to their excellent financial state. Leave 6.

WP and CL - you would say no because of their relatively new locations, I doubt they would be going anywhere at all with the Arena and the Showgrounds being new. Leaves 4.

SF - although have lost money over the last 3 years have it in the bank and have spent with a purpose. Would never be told to leave Fremantle Oval by the WAFL - could you imagine no footy in Fremantle?? (Could ground share and probably will with EF in the near future - has to happen.) Leaves 3.

EF - Can improve their finances by ground sharing Freo Oval. Too much history and geographically not linked that closely (except for SF and Perth) to be a real merging chance. Leaves 2.

Perth and SD - One has had no success, the other has no money. Geographically close-ish. Zones pretty good for future draftees and income and club success you would think. The Perth Swans - red, white and black with 2 home grounds? If EP / WCE end up going to Lathlain then the "Perth Swans" can be based at Bassendean. Leaves Subiaco at Medibank by themselves - they should be ok with that financially but we wouldn't be using the ground to its optimum.

That would be the only way the WAFL would get back to 8 teams. Just for the record I don't like the idea of the merger for the sake of an even number.

If only the WCE bought in their own side and made it a 10 team competition!! Take overs, uneven numbers, loss of club identity would all be gone and with the $140K each year for the WAFL clubs finances would be looking a whole lot rosier.

I started supporting Swan Districts in the 1960s and continue to support them to this day. HOWEVER, a merger between Swans and Perth would mean that neither Swans nor Perth existed at that point; and as such, I certainly would not support the merged entity and I suspect and lot of other Swans' and Perth supporter would do a similar thing.

I'm with you there Swan. I have been a Swans fan since I was 10yo in the late 60's and I would not even consider supporting a merged team. I would find other things to do with my Saturday afternoons, just like I would be doing now if I was an ex East Perth supporter.

I think we are falling for the ole 2 card trick here, myself included. All of these posts have been about negative mergers, lack of crowds and which club has the bigger appendage.

This is exactly what the AFL and probably the WAFC want t be hearing and reading from the WAFL true supporters. Rumblings, negativity and the demise of the comp in 10 yrs.

Firstly no clubs have to merge or should merge. Fabric of the comp will be torn more and we don't want that. To suggest EF and SF merge is an absolute mind numbing, disasterous idea not only for those 2 clubs' supporters but the history, rivalry and tradition for the WAFL.

NO 2 CLUBS SHOULD BE MERGING OR EVEN SPOKEN ABOUT.

Clubs have been in SOS mode before and got through it. Different times I know but as of right now with the alignment the G7 clubs probably wouldn't have had this much money at their disposal for 20-30 yrs. I know it's blood money from the alignment but since that is in who cares now - the money each WAFL gets SHOULD ensure your club's future. I'm quite sure that SD, SF and WP who made heavy losses will be planning to stop that very quickly. People are employed to do that very thing and the hand outs will only help that.

If people think the AFL can force to WAFL clubs to merge, for example SF and EF to then have the Fremantle Dockers align with the new WAFL side then please give me a break. The only way a merger would ever take place is due to lack of money. The only reason. EP and Peel jumped at that chance to save themselves financially and root themselves up in every other way but NOW each of the G7 clubs should really be united, licking their lips when ever they play EP or Peel and use the money from the alignment to get their traditional club up and running, invest in their own zones and become strong for decades to come.

I understand that any super junior will be lost to the AFL system but it's the ones who you invest in who don't get drfted but have the passion to play league footy (like Sokol, Kelly, Martinez, Borovac, McIntosh at SF for example) who will be your future.)

We SHOULD be all up and about right now talking about match ups, new players, who will be the rising star and what teams will make the 4.

I for one DON'T think that EP or Peel will win the GF. Host club structures don't work that well internally and that's from experience. Hald an AFL squad and half a WAFL squad trying to mix with different fitness bases, different training habits, different Saturday night celebration ideas and different levels of commitment / skills can cause quick disharmony. It will be like an under 12 team on some occasions - he won't kick it to me because I'm not an AFL player and he only handballs to him because they are old WAFL drinking buddies - it's pathetic but it happens.

Anyway screw the merger ideas boys - use the blood money to your clubs advantage - get down each week to support you side and enjoy that we still have this 129 yr old competition each year, with your club in it, on tv, on radio, on the internet with bouncedown magazines, newspaper coverage and the good ol footy budget!!

Roll on Saturday - I'm excited!!

Their not interested in old farts like you, just like they weren't interested in you or your opinion when the host club deal got announced. In 20 yrs time, you'll be in the home a peace with a nappy on not swigging on an emu export can at basso , its about attracting the new younger demographic to the comp on a long term basis.

You're wrong here Bazza. First of all I am in my 30's, hardly that old. Secondly if people continue to whinge and whine about every tiny element of the game that we love then the powers that control our game will "do" something because of all of the negative talk going around.

Forget the AFL if you are a true WAFL diehard. I love both and have 30+ years involved at the club - I love the club.

Without the WAFL, SANFL and VFL etc there is no AFL correct? Players have to be nurtured somewhere / somehow. The alignment is bullshit yes, but every other state already has it. We have tried it also, wasn't successful but it hasn't been a "new" idea.

In a way the G7 clubs screwed it up by not allowing WCE to have their own side. Would have made it 10 teams, no EP take over and each of the remaining 8 WAFL clubs would have been financially looked after. But no, they f'd that up. Now we have the worst scenario, especially for EP followers.

If looking forward to this coming season and seasons ahead with all 8 traditional WAFL clubs operating in their own right is living in the past then GOOD.

Ground share, use the alignment money well and win games of footy is how you will survive the next 5-15 years.

Stop getting hung up about this poxy alignment model. They are just other teams to beat!!

What makes you think that changes will be negative, Im all for them if it means a better outcome.
Hung up about it? Lets just see if it pans out to be a crowd puller and good for the comp.

The good thing is at least when a side is named on a Thursday night they won't be subjected to outside interference. A point on that, previous seasons Claremont were forced to play Silvagni in the forward line, absolutely lost up there, had no idea, put back in the backline and he was a star for us.
