The most boring game of footy I have ever been to was when the Eagles thrashed Adeliade at Subi around 16 - 17 years ago. I think this was the only WCE game I went to.

A few weeks later I was back at Subi for Swans v Subi and the ressies game had more atmosphere.

Has anyone else been to a Sydney Swans game at the SCG? There is a perfect example of 0% understanding of the game, a 0% atmosphere.

The GWS Giants can kick a goal at Manuka - dead silence until the umpire indicates its a goal, then then some golf claps at best.

I felt that college football was more popular with mainstream americans. It also felt like it was on TV a lot more too. The people there identify with its value more than Australians do with their code, that I have no doubt about. like someone else mentioned here, the advantage NFL and all sports in the US have is their population. They will always generate an audience and therefore massive income streams. The NFL themselves have TV rights up around the 20 or 25 Billion dollar mark, and the NFL distribute about half a Billion each year to every franchise. How do you compare that with what we have? However considering our mere 22 million population, the AFL TV rights of $1.25 billion is about justified.

College football is basically at that point now where they are self funded. Like all sports there is moments of financial struggle, but in the main they are colossal identities in their own right. They get the respect from the top, and it filters down. The end result is what you see now. Two highly structured and powerful competitions, and an unbreakable code. With an educated fan base.

Wow - interesting stuff mate. Thanks for that. Amazing having two comps of equal footing running at the same time.

That would actually annoy the big wigs at The AFL, rather than make them happy that their code is popular

What the hell is with that at afl games in WA - the crowd madly waving their arms at boundary throw ins trying to get on tv? It doesn't happen in other states.

I know. I've wondered that myself. But knowing a few of my friends who go to these games and aren't big footy fans, they are probably bored by the second quarter.

Welcome back LH ..and dont forget those brain dead flogs who start up a silly mexican wave in the middle of the footy or even cricket i noticed this summer ..what is with that crap I would much rather watch the actual game than be part of that rubbish!

I have nothing against 20/20 at all. Basically it is ENTERTAINMENT , aimed at the lowest common denominator. So much Sport is now a fad, which like all fads will come and go. Where do 40,000 eagles FOOTBALL supporters go when thier team plays away. ??

Hope I don't insult you unk...I used to enjoy the bit of stir between us, but you seem to have turned into an arrogant prick, but that's probably the pom in you ;) ....btw, I like all forms of cricket INCLUDING 20/20 and I certainly don't include myself in the LCD that your hoity persona deems!!

I didnt say YOU were in the LCD s58, what i said it is mainly aimed at the lcd. Much as my kitchen rules , big brother, masterchef, etc. They all rate thier heads off, BUT spare me the contrieved fake shyte that they produce. The masses (lcd) is what they ain at...and GET. Its a simple format, where people dont have to think or concentrate.

Can't argue about the so called 'reality shows' unk - what a load of unadulterated crap they are. All I can say is thank goodness for Foxtel. But even so, you still can't escape the rubbish - open a newspaper and there's a half page article on one of the shows. FFS, what a boring life some people must have.

unfortunately we have our reasons I agree astro.
but I agree with hincha too. I hope people support their clubs forever more regardless.

I will still watch wafl when its on the telly. I love local footy.
I cant see myself at an EP game, been over that before.
might catch a freo derby or a few demons or lions games, just occasionally.
I enjoy junior footy so I will always walk to the local park and take in a game. take me dog & deckchair.

Jardine I have only started reading the posts in this topic so you may have already had this invitation: you are more than welcome to come down to Basso and support the mighty black and whites. We certainly would like as much support as possible to our home games.

La Hincha wrote: Thanks Cesspit. Yeah I think They will be tough to beat also. There's no denying that but I wanna be there on that day if and when my club manages to do it that's for sure.

I don't know why it is but people in this country only watch the top level of sport or what is currently fashionable but never the next tier down, no matter how good it is.

The WAFL, The Sheffield Shield, etc suffer because of this but both are quality comps.

People seem to be more intent on waving to the camera at an Eagles game when there is a boundary throw in rather than watching the play.

I guess we're not the sport mad country we once were.

I mean they sometimes get 100,000 people at a college football game in America which is a tier down from their NFL. And when I lived in Argentina, I noticed that they get good crowds at their WAFL level rugby comps.

I'm not sure that making any massive structural changes to the WAFL will make any difference because we will always be the second tier in the eyes of WA people no matter what.

The only thing that can make a difference are promotions the size of West Perth's British/migrant/newcomer match that they've staged the last two years.

But I still reckon, despite everything, it is a good quality comp.

LaH I will continue to support Swans until either Swans or I expire and I hope all the true WAFL supporters do the same. When the Eagles came into the competition I couldn't understand how people who had been supporting a WAFL club for twenty plus years suddenly stopped going to watch their WAFL club. I certainly hope that there isn't a similar occurrence now that we have the host club alignment.
