I don't know why it is but people in this country only watch the top level of sport or what is currently fashionable but never the next tier down, no matter how good it is.

The WAFL, The Sheffield Shield, etc suffer because of this but both are quality comps.

People seem to be more intent on waving to the camera at an Eagles game when there is a boundary throw in rather than watching the play.

I guess we're not the sport mad country we once were.

I mean they sometimes get 100,000 people at a college football game in America which is a tier down from their NFL. And when I lived in Argentina, I noticed that they get good crowds at their WAFL level rugby comps.

I'm not sure that making any massive structural changes to the WAFL will make any difference because we will always be the second tier in the eyes of WA people no matter what.

The only thing that can make a difference are promotions the size of West Perth's British/migrant/newcomer match that they've staged the last two years.

But I still reckon, despite everything, it is a good quality comp.

What the hell is with that at afl games in WA - the crowd madly waving their arms at boundary throw ins trying to get on tv? It doesn't happen in other states.

Aussie are as well learned about sports world wide as any other nation.
I think you sell yourselves and the nation down by short changing our knowledge.

Yeah mate, ask an Eagles fan about football and see their knowledge. I know people, some I've known for 30 years, who were never into football and really still aren't but they go to the AFL because it's the fashionable thing to do.

I know. I've wondered that myself. But knowing a few of my friends who go to these games and aren't big footy fans, they are probably bored by the second quarter.

And on the original topic the WAFL does it self no favours with absolutely zero promotion of our great comp ..why dont they market the fact we are the strongest football competition outside of the AFL as proven by beating the VFL last season ..or what is wrong with bringing back on old promotional slogan like "Scream For Your Team" which was the slogan back when I was a boy in the 80's going down the retro route that is all back in fashion!

Yeah exactly mate. I'm sure it's because they're not into it that much in the first place.

As you can probably tell, living in Argentina, left a big impression one me. They really are sports fans. Soccer is obviously No 1 but they also follow rugby, hockey, polo, cricket, lawn bowls and tennis with a passion like nothing you can compare to here. Of course some fans take it to the extreme like this fan of River Plate FC

I have nothing against 20/20 at all. Basically it is ENTERTAINMENT , aimed at the lowest common denominator. So much Sport is now a fad, which like all fads will come and go. Where do 40,000 eagles FOOTBALL supporters go when thier team plays away. ??

Yeah T20 has done it's job well. Nothing against it either. But weren't they doing the wave at the Perth test this year or was it the ODI?

Could well have been at the test. The crowds these days are like the kids on playschool, yell out when the man over the PA says, and boo on cue when told too. Its pantomine for adults. Cant wait till some bright maeketing guru decides to run an episode of My kitchen rules on the pitch during lunch time at the WACA.
