GTR putting my bias aside,there was nothing like Perth Oval on match day in the halcyon days of the WAFLThe Beaufort Hotel,which my old man ran briefly in the early seventies,the Brisbane the Norwood and the Claisebrook Tavern were all packed to the brim,and finding parking in the backstreets of the industrial East Perth area was a real art form,but I will never forget those grand old times.

The so called Western Derby has really died in the arse last decade or so, remember the 90s and early 2000s when there was real hype, pubs would be packed with viewers just don't see that anymore more.

Yes remember all those EP pubs near the oval, sadly only one is left - Brisbane, all the rest bulldozed despite being historic. Pretty sure the Norwood ( closest to the oval ) was run by a former EP player at one stage.

Yes we’ve mentioned that Sharkie,about a 1000 more than the ‘69 GF,but you can thank ex Royal Ian Thomson for getting there when he kicked 7 in the first semi to knock us out by 2 points,which was a big turnaround,because we beat you by a 100 points at the old Moss street stadium of excellence several weeks before the finals,but for overall numbers,Perth Derby’s win hands down.

Nothing I mean nothing matched the passion of the WAFL in those glory days Bazz.There was blanket media coverage with 6pm,6wf,6ix,6ky broadcasting all 4 games,the Bob Shields and Co ABC review of the games on Saturday night,the weekend news WAFLgreen liftout,which would come out a hour after the games were completed,Dads Army channel 7 show on Sundays,post Mortems in schoolyards and work places,and also a bit of gloating if your team was victorious.Good luck if you can find a punter drinking at the Brisbane now who knows anything about the Royals or WAFL competition.

Well the real derby is East Fremantle and South Fremantle so-called because they were classics. Last season the WA day Derby alone outnumbered the 2 meetings between East and West Perth. The derby also was and always will attract the bigger crowd.

Fremantle oval has always been the real home of the WAFL .Always will be.
The Fremantle Derbies have always been the only Derbies.
The rest are just fake copies.

That was because the Dockers were fresh in. A team of nobodies that no body wanted.The AFL, the WAFL and the Eagles.Dockers played their first game in 1995. Of course they were going to fill the ground.
But they started to disappear when Freo began to become a team.It was hard to find an Eagles supporter then.Hard to get  a bet on with them.
