Derby week in the Great West this weekend.
Fremantle V West Coast Sunday , but we all know that the only Derby is the Fremantle rivalry Derby.
South abd East Fremantle.
A show case to be had at the home of West Australian football, Fremantle oval on Saturday as 2:10 PM.
Good luck to both teams, but more luck to the Might Fighting Red and White Bulldogs.

 

Do you remember Stevie Marsh taking a pot shot at the pseudo ‘Derby’ claims on channel 7 WAFL footy show? 
“There’s only one derby and that’s the Freo Derby”.  How right he was and still is.

I don’t think anyone on this post disputed Subi being the home of footy DF. 
Zzzzzzz…buzzer went, you got the first 2 derbies right, but there isn’t a real third one.

Sorry chaps,I believe you need a memory refresh,there have only been 13 wafl home and away matches that have attracted 20,000 + crowds and here are the Derby breakdowns. PERTH DERBIES No.1 1969 E.P v WP 26,760;Perth oval , No.2 1978 WP vEP 24567 Leederville, No.4 1979 SF v EF 22390, No.7 1979 EFvSF 21377, No.9 1961 EP vWP 21105, No.12 EP v WP 20363 , No.13 EF v SF 20287 so it’s Perth Derbies in a landslide!!!Ciccerello and Wharfie lands claim to fame was the 1979 GF which attracted 52000 plus about a 1000 more then the 1969 Perth Derby GF,but for overall bums on seats,I’m afraid it’s no race.

when they locked the turnstiles up it was 22399 
about another 6500 climbed over fences , walls and even 400 to 500 got onto the roof of the clubhouse 
some even scaled the northern end wall and got into the old moreton fig 
and there were another 1500 in the utility area of the Hospital 
we were even up on the old scoreboard hustings in the fenced off areas 
real figure was 30000 and that is fact

Mueller Park wasn't even built until 1908 - it was a swamp that hadn't even been dewatered
 

1969 WAFL Grandfinal drawed a crowd of 51,369.Played between West and East Perth.
Whats remarkable about that attendance is Perths population was just over 500,000 people.
The Wafl was at the end of the 1960"s Golden era .And was at the hight of its power.
In todays numbers you would need an attendance of over 200,000 fans to match the interest in the 69 GF..
Basically one out of every 10 people in Perth would have to go to the footy.Of coarse a,large rural crowd would of gone to the game..
From the time before the Afl takeover.East Perth where allways the largest followed club.Maby Souths 2nd folowed by Swans + WP.

I don’t know how you could call the speculated numbers of unpaid spectators as fact  Doggy,but you may or may not be right with that estimated number,but the bottom line is only 3 Freo Derby’s have officially exceeded 20 k in the home and away season.
