With the WACFL introducing a player payment cap across all coubtry leagues how will this impact the ammos.

The nuts and bolts of the cap-
Max player payment per game will be $500 unless you are and. Ex AFL player ($1000)

Some leagues already also have a points cap with plaers rated on a points basis.

I think this will have a massive impact on ammos with ammos clubs now being able to match the payments that country clubs are offering

I thought the idea behind ametuers was so that there is strictly no payment to players

Player points systems will always be more effective, transparent and honest than salary caps. There are many ways to get around a salary cap, but there is no way that a club can field a team with more points than the maximum allowable and get away with it.

Agreed. Player points is the way to do it. Capped player payments will never be honest or restrictive

I think it would be the only fair way to try and tackle this topic, every club does it i dont see any reason why you shouldnt be able to bring some quality players to club, and try to achieve every clubs goal of being in A Grade. Lets say a team gets 60 Points for a starting 22. For this experiment lets use Stirling as an Example (Subiaco Zone)

1 Point for a player from your local district (e.g. Stirling JFC, Warwick Greenwood JFC) or lives in your local district with no WAFL/AFL experience
2 Points for a player who has played football for your clubs WAFL zoned club (Subiaco)
5 Points for a player who played junior football in your zone but has played at another WAFL Club (East Perth)
10 Points for a player who has played WAFL/AFL Football for another club (East Fremantle)

Boothead I'm sorry mate but the post code a young bloke lives in or where he played his junior footy is of absolutely no relevance to this issue. If you look at A & B Grade, there are a significant number of University based (UWA & Curtin)& Private School based (CBC, Trinity Aquinas, Wesley, Collegians) and such a policy would be totally discriminatory.

Any kid of 17 or 18 should be free to play for the club of his choice, and ONLY attract the lowest points, as long as he has not played WAFL first. Similarly a player who went to a private school should be free to play for ANY club in any zone.

If the WAAFL do introduce a points system, then at the very least it should be a KISS system, so that we don't have a system that allocates a whole range of points based on the number of games a player plays at the AFL or WAFL level. Otherwise it will be a nightmare.

1 Point for a player who has not played WAFL or AFL or at another WAAFL club

2 Points for a player who transfers from another WAAFL club

3 Points for a player who played WAFL

5 Points for a player who has played AFL Football

ANY player who returns to their ORIGINAL WAAFL club after having played AFL or WAFL should only be a 1 point player

ANY player who plays 50 games for their WAAFL club after having played AFL/WAFL should automatically revert to a 1 point player

Plenty to like about your proposal, Big Al and your comments re 17 and 18 year olds being able to play where they want are spot on. Relatively simple to administer and tend to agree that tying points to WAFL games played is both harder to administer and basically does not really provide a true relative value (e.g. give me a 40 game WAFL player you get at 23 over a 150 game player at 30 any time). Also like the idea that coming back and playing for an extended period is also rewarded by a points reduction.

Still need to tread carefully though. The WAAFL is as strong as it has ever been and I would hate to see ex WAFL players forced to abandon plans to come down and play with their mates because of some arbitrary points system that is not well thought out. Undoubtedly there are some payments, but the scope of them is totally overstated - not sure where everyone who points fingers thinks clubs get the sort of money to pay that is thrown about. Basically it is assumed if you are successful or merely play A Grade then you must be rorting the system. Politics of envy at its very best.

TK, lets get real.

It's not a 'few clubs', it's a LOT of clubs - ands it's from A Grade down, to my certain knowledge, C4.

That 'sort of money' IS being thrown around - tens of thousands of dollars per year.

A points system will, to some extent, sort it out. It won't stop the rorts that have gone on for YEARS.

Personally, I'm NOT in favour of a salary cap - it's either an AMATEUR competition or it's not.

As I said the last time this topic arose, it continues to amaze me that people want to play around with the current WAAFL competition. The standard of the A Grade & B Grade competitions over the past five years has been excellent and continues to excel. However I recognise at the lower levels that an introduction of some high quality players can probably make a difference, so perhaps a points sytem should be considered.

Having said that a lot more work needs to be done to encourage players to remain at their A Grade clubs and stop the continual drain of good players to country leagues. I am not advocating paying players but increasing the existing MATCH DAY "rewards based incentive" for the Best 5 players each game. That is why I believe the WAAFL MUST increase the best player incentives substantially for each senior team to a max of $1,500 per team per match. From memory the current level is $350.00 per team.

If we recognise individual players much more "on merit" then the sponsors will get on board that concept much more readily.

If we have to have a points system then for goodness sake make it the simplest that we can possibly have to administer, particularly in the first year.

The last thing we want are teams losing points because they made an honest error in the number of games a player has played in at WAFL or AFL level.

My five cents worth.....

Five points: Players who have played at least one AFL game in the past three years and are not a “home player”.

Three points: Players who have played at least five VFL, SANFL WAFL or Other Senior State league matches over the past three years and are not a “home player”.

Two points: Senior community & Country League players transferring

One point: Home players

Home Player Definition
A player who has played at least one senior game with his amateur club prior to playing AFL or in a Senior State League or at least two seasons with an amateur club after transferring from an AFL or State league level.
