Would be interesting to see how they've tracked throughout the year in terms of cards and melees. The league introduced a demerit system for the coaches, and going off what's been said it would appear there might be a coach or two closing in the 10 point limit.

Something needs to be done to quash this sort of behaviour, and trying to justify it makes clubs look even "amateurish" than some already are. No one should have to spend their Saturday's getting their jaws re-wired after cowardly attacks on the footy field. It'd be interesting to see if the one punch laws extend to the footy field?

Umpires need to do more. I would rather see a red for something light to deter anything really bad then a guy with a broke jaw unconcious on the ground later on in the game.

Wendy, its a worry you mention the same number that was the instigator in the game I witnessed. I really hope it wasn't #8 that did what happened on the weekend against Ocean Ridge.
For the colts coach to stand on the boundary, yelling out to his players to belt the opposition is a reflection on the club as a whole and should be dealt with.
As for the umpires, Maddingtons colts and reserves umpire (same bloke, Guy Sebastian aphro hair) was one of the worst one sided umpires I have seen. Another reflection on the club.

Dreaming, have you ever been a field umpire at a level higher than auskick. If not go and try umpiring at colts level. Why do you think there are 3 umpires at higher levels, without umpires the game would go back to the dark ages when captains were the umpires. Is that what you are advocating? I have seen your club umpire and he also leaves a lot to be desired in regards to positioning and therefore vision on the field.

tigers60, Im not going to sit here and spruke about what I have and haven't done. I realise how important the umpires are to the game and I am not advocating anything.
I have never seen such blatant cheating than what I witnessed by the Maddington umpire but that's fine, it didn't help them win the game. He seen a player get hit from behind in a melee and left it saying he didn't see anything..... I don't agree with that.

Just an observation from over the years...it's uncanny how often these behind the play incidents that end in serious injury involve an off duty policeman.

Know one condones this stuff but if the alleged victim was one of the snipers allegedly running around dishing out high tackles etc then maybe he got what was coming to him?. You don't incur this kind of reaction for no reason, rightly or wrongly. Two people might be having a lot of soup in the next few weeks, one out of a straw and the other from behind bars

This sounds a lot like a confirmation bias to me. How often *do* these incidents involve an off duty policeman?
Maybe start by defining a serious incident, tell us how many serious incidents there are, in total. You might want to limit your sample to a state or league to reduce your leg work. Then work out what percentage of these incidents involved policemen compared to the total percentage of policemen in your sample and then compare that figure against the percentage of policemen in the age group of your sample the community and see if there is a noticeable variation. Then make your conclusion.

Or - just stop making shit up. Your unresearched insinuation is offensive.

Off duty cop or not that shouldn't make any difference to the outcome. Sounds like he was dishing out a bit himself and the bloke who squared it up took it to far. There's alway opportunities throughout the game to dish up a bit of retribution to a cheap shot or two, unfortunately sounds like the maddo bloke took the cheapest shot of all to get even.
Some good should come of this the ridge bloke will probably change his playing ways and the maddo bloke will get plenty of time off, new hard line WAAFL will give him years not weeks. That puts everyone on notice that this stuff won't be tolerated anymore

Stakky, I have no allegiance with any club here and did preface my comment with 'just an observation' ...statistically it would impossible to validate how many police officers have been involved in footy let alone in violent football incidents across the state from my end. Maybe a better way to word it would be an observation that from memory most times I read of these incidents in the media it seems to involve an off duty police officer. No offence was intended or did I mean to insinuate anything negative towards those that are employed as police officers...just a personal observation based on the few incidents I've read about across the media in the past decade or so. The Clint Roberts fraca comes to mind along with another incident in the courts I vaguely recall reading about in the southern leagues more recently. For what it's worth 2 of my best mates are coppers and I harbour no ill feeling nor hatred whatsoever to those that serve our state in the force, generally bloody good blokes doing a bloody difficult job for a living.
