Viper I don't think they just take anyone who put up their hand because as we know there are some pretty shit club umps out there, just look at this thread for proof of that!!!!!

Just because they are panel or appointed by league doesn't make them decent. I've never seen a good umpire even at AFL level.

i know there are some spuds on this site but that comment just confirms you as the #1 ive come across. Of course there are some terrible umpires going around but if you cant give credit where its due to blokes who do a pretty hard job in an extremely difficult sport to officiate, then youre an idiot.

all league games are covered by panel umpires this weekend and they will all be a step above the clubbies.

I would like to see you give it a try Bundy, and watch when the abuse and the fact you would be terrible makes you pack up and go home at half time.

in the last few seasons I have played in grades with club umpires and I have played in grades with panel appointed umpires.

You know what, Panel umpires are just as bad or worse than club umpires

I thought Bundy's comments were fairly accurate, It doesn't make them any better or worse just because they are panel umpires

PH, judging by your comment threads it seems clear that you play for / are affiliated with a team in the C1 competition.

Panel umpires are appointed to C1 however, C1 umpires are the old/slow blokes that dont train that are probably no different to clubbies other than the fact they umpire different teams week to week.

I agree on that point.

However, come finals, regular A and B league umpires will be taking care of all league finals, and its very clear they are a cut above the clubbies.

All i am saying is that to have a view that all umpires are shit, is pretty rough and disrespectful, especially when we as an amateur community would see the benefits of attracting more panel umpires to help in grades C2 and below.

Yes it is a known fact that many club umpires get paid a very similar amounts to panel umpires. Just because clubs cannot attract people who want to umpire so those that do name their price. sbelly to make the statement just because a club umpire gets paid more than a panel umpire makes them really good is pretty lame logic. Clubs are desperate so they pay the going rate end of story. If they are lucky enough to get a good club umpire they will pay a bit more to keep him.

PH if all you have seen is C1 then I can understand your comment. Aside from that I totally disagree. The panel umpires start their preseason in January and are generally fitter than many players. They also have plenty of training on theory, new rules and are match day observed and coached. Club umpires rarely do even one of the things I have mentioned and just turn up on the day and take the money. I really fail to see that there is any comparison!!
