Panorama, Roleystone

There was always talk about the Roleystone one starting back up there on the corner of Brookton hwy and Soldiers Rd during the early 1990's, but unfortunately Roleystone Real Estate purchased the land and put their office there complete with a piss weak mini golf setup. The synthetic turf that looked like it had seen a couple of seasons on the local cricket pitch up at Cross Park.

Roleystone... Its amazing they had a drive in to be honest, let alone one that was more than just a calico sheet hanging of a Hills hoist. That town doesn't have a public swimming pool, library or police station.

Growing up in Innaloo the Metro was THE drive-in par excellence. You could fit hundreds of cars in there but the best bit was, as we got a bit older and they built the fast food restaurant strip bordering it on Scarborough Beach road enterprising lads like myself and other Innaloo reprobates (some of whom went on to WAFL glory) worked out that if you scaled the rooftop on the restaurant strip after dark you could watch the blue movies shown there on Sunday nights for free. No sound of course but none was required. Better than any Sex Ed lessons I got at school.

When they built the adjacent cinema at the front on Leige St there used to be a procession of kids gathered every Saturday morning at Innaloo Shopping Centre who would get escorted by "Happy Harry" (Sid Plummer of Victor Glass ad fame) across Scarborough Beach Rd to a Saturday matinee. Remember seeing "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" there once and plenty of other forgettable pommy kids films.

Those were the days with the Nookie across the road, always trying to sneak in there. Got my first underage beer there (although the bar maid insisted it be a shandy given her suspicisons on my true age). Used to be a hot spot of local toughs and local Aboriginal families like the Clinch's but we all wore the Innaloo bagde with bride.

Also used to frequent the various pinball parlours down on Scabs beach that LH referred to. Had a paper round in that area and on pay day poured it all into the pinnies, Space Invaders, Galaxy (my personnel fav), Frogger etc.

Seemed such innocent pastimes for kids in those days. Apart from the odd Surf v Bog blue it was a pretty tame environment for a 14yr old to be spending his time before getting the 446 back up Scarborough Beach Road to Innaloo. Look at that area now - sweet FA for kids to go down at Scarborough apart from blue, vandalise and get bladdered in the hot sun.

Also remember Mark Holden landing in a helicopter at Boans Innaloo (now Westfield). What pandamonium that caused. My sister still has the special issue "Myer Miss Shop" launch single released for the occassion with Mr Holden giving a spiel on the Miss Shop before launching into "I want to make you my Lady".

Then it was off to Grumpys Pizzas with me good mate "Yumbo" Barron under the ramp up to the upper floor car park for a few Grumpy Specials and a can of Leeds Lemonade.

Happy days, my friends, happy days.

Remember when they started playing a few pornos to get the crowd back - how funny was that for censorship.

Coles in the city had a little restaurant up stairs. It always had great cheap food. Just before it shut down in around 1997, you could still get a box of fish and chips, plus drink (Guest) for $2.50

What about Weaver & Lock cool drinks... Their lemonade was something!
