lets not be quick and blame the delivery guys, or come up with strange statements like change the rules. This is a tragic accident and can be classed as nothing else.......The poor kid passed away doing his job, and doing something he loved, lets focus on that, and not start a silly debate on are bouncers good for the game or not.....Lets face facts bowlers don't bowl bouncers to hurt batsmen, they bowl them to try to get wickets

I'm sure last year when we were bouncing the poms tail like mad and Clark was telling Anderson to get ready for a broken F&^%$NG arm, like me you would have all thought you beauty, in fact I think the common call from the public and the media was go get them Mitch, make them hurt and tear them apart.

Actually they changed the rules after the body line series, they made it illegal to bowl more than a limited number of bouncers in any one over.

Bazza this thread is about Phil Hughes, if you want to talk about banning the bouncer, or what happened after the bodyline series start another thread please. Here is the link to what Peter North is talking about, it wasn't the bouncer that killed him, it was a medical condition based on getting hit where he was hit. They say it was similar to strangulation as per this quote below from the article on WWOS website

Hughes suffered a vertebral artery dissection, a tear to the artery which has similar symptoms to strangulation and strokes.

The 25-year-old died on Thursday afternoon having failed to regain consciousness in St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney after being struck by the ball when batting for South Australia at the SCG on Tuesday.

"Subarachnoid haemorrhage is the medical term for it and it is extremely rare," Dr Brukner said.

"If you look in the literature there is only about 100 cases ever reported so this is incredibly rare with only one previous case ever reported as the result of a cricket ball."

They did not change the law on bumpers after 32-33: the law centred on intimidation, which could be one bumper for a tail ender or three or four for a batsman. What they did change is the number of fieldsmen behind square leg. I would actually like to see this law get the boot, no captain should be told where to place his field unless it is comedy cricket.

Here is to good memories of Hughes in South Africa - RIP

May he rest in peace.
As PH said, now is not the time to be talking rubbish about the game.
There is no blame.it is all part of the way the game is played.
My thoughts go out to Sean Abbott as well.

I feel so bad for the lad, his family and Abbott - just an horrendous day - one that will take a lot to get over. As bad as it is, I'm with anchor & ph - I hope they don't go overboard banning this, that and everything. Let them look at personal protection equipment to stop this ever happening again. God this a very sad day.

Good heavens, that's going to add to the family's agony.

Incorrect.the following was added..Law 42.6(a) includes: "The bowling of fast short pitched balls is dangerous and unfair if the umpire at the bowler's end considers that by their repetition and taking into account their length, height and direction they are likely to inflict physical injury on the striker".

It was a freak of nature that caused his death are you one of these parents that keeps their kids inside in case they stub their toes, there is no way they will ban the bouncer which is what you seem to be championing it would be the death of cricket.

Bazza: Nonsense old son -- what you are quotting from is a more recent change to the laws of the game; nothing to do with bloody bodyline. Where I do agree with you Bazz is on how poor Hughes died: he died at the hands of a cricket ball, which cut an artery leading to the brain; hence he suffered stroke like symptoms. It was no freak of nature, I agree.

The answer is better foot-work by batsmen; cove your off-stump by going back and across as this takes you out of the line of the short ball. This is how Bradman, Hutton and all the others avoided being hit. If you stand still or leg side of ball, as batsman have done since the advent of helmets and one-day cricket, you either have to hit the ball or the ball will hit you. It is that simple.
