Swans have 3 scratch matches before the start of the season.

The first is very early, Wednesday 26 February against West Coast. The Eagles requested the game to give those players not playing in the Essendon game the following day a run. Game starts at 6pm at Lathlain Park.
The other 2 games will be late March against East Perth at home and South Fremantle away

Thanks for this R U Serious. Swans may not risk playing many of their experienced guys in the February game so it may be a young team.

The coach was asked will we be playing reserves players but he said it will be league. Have to wait and see. Hopefully will give the new recruits a run just to see what they offer.

The 5 most important players at Swans in 2020 according to John Townsend
Corey Gault
George Hampson
Tony Notte
Matt Riggio
Sam Fisher

No real surprises there.

Apart from these 5 there are a core of experienced players who will be expected to lead the way in 2020. Frank Anderson from the Northern Blues is already taking on a mentoring role according to the club and the other lad from Victoria Costigan will be handy as well. Then there are guys like Payne, Noble, Kohlmann, Blakely, Howard, Turner, Stephens and Warwick Wilson who have played enough footy and know what to do. Then you have the talented youngsters who have had a bit of a taste such as Cipro, Bain, Hackett, Reidy, Graydon Wilson, Raynor, More, Ireland, Dylan Smith and Aiden Clarke who should be able to take the next step this year. Then we have the handful of recruits from East Perth and Claremont who should be pushing for spots as well as the exciting new players from the colts system. Not sure what role Rhys Palmer will play in all this but hopefully he will be involved in some coaching if he is not able to play.

Looking through the list and even with my optimistic hat on I would say there would be some improvement this year but the team still lacks the quality required to compete with the better WAFL sides at this stage.

A slightly more attacking styke is also needed; there is certainly talent at the club, something obvious in the fact that SD had one of the best records against subi last season.

I would agree with that comment AR. Since 2016 under Harding and now Pickering, Swans have been too quick to default to minimising scoreboard damage which leads to a defensive often boring brand of football that Swans supporters have become accustomed to since then.

A change in approach to a more attacking style of play would be a lot more exciting to watch and I should imagine be far more interesting for the players tactically as well. It could lead to some big defeats until they got used to it but lets face it everyone likes to see lots of goals in games of footy. I will never forget the Tuesday afternoon state of origin goal fests of the mid 80's.
