Mikeu, I think the club has strengthened our midfield and half forward lines with their recruiting this year and hopefully this will give us more first use of the ball and better opportunities for our forwards. How often did we have to start our attacks from the backline over the last few years. resulting in our forwards pushing up to the centre and beyond and many times competing 2 against 1 with the opposition backs. Things definitely have to change this year.

the mid-field and half forward area was certainly our biggest weakness, the club has done the recruiting but like anything we will wait and see how they go.
hopefully we dont see half our forward line down chasing kicks and having 2-3 blokes competing against 6 defenders to try and get a goal all year.

Spot on. The style of footy you have described is pretty punishing and there were a number of games last year particularly early in the season where we would be competitive in the first 3 quarters but then be over run in the last because of the fatigue caused by players having to constantly push up into the opposition forward line. One example that springs to mind was the game at Lathlain V Perth where we were the better team for 3 quarters but ran out of legs in the last. Same thing happened against Subiaco at Bassendean and East Perth at Leederville. I'm sure there were a few others.

Maybe things are starting to turn around for the club. Recording a $200,000 profit plus $100,000 for back payment for the mobile tower.

200k is extraordinary at WAFL level only $ubi has managed those sort of profits over the years. I'm curious how you managed that, especially after a poor season finishing last?

Just read the annual report on line. Would have to have an in depth read to see how they made such a good profit.

Yep Subi a few years ago now and EP more recently but a great turn around by the Swans board and members.

not recruiting interstate players for probably 6-7 years saves a lot of money, relocation costs when recruiting are massive.
local recruiting was minimal and also partially off-set by players moving on or elsewhere - Rogers, Boekhurst.
dont spend any money and run last or near the bottom is pretty easy !

I just had a quick look at your Annual Report and the Finance Director's piece at the end...very impressive turnaround in 5 years. Well done to the club and all who have knuckled down and made some tough decisions. You lot have had a lean run on the field for a while so hopefully now some money can be spent in the footy department and start to rise up the ladder again.

They might need a slogan BC. "We're Coming" - Carlton circa Brett Ratten or "Whatever it Takes" - circa James Hird and The Weapon (The Frankenstein experiment).
