I think I understand now how things work in the bizarro world inhabited by EF fans. A club and player sit down, on equal footing, to sign a two year contract, including agreed match payments. That contract is subject to a clause that the player may liaise with rival clubs. If any rival club makes a higher offer than the agreed match payments, the club is obliged to re-negotiate and match the offer. If the club declines, the player can exercise an option to terminate the contract and play for the rival club. Meanwhile, the player, not the coach, gets to decide what on field position he plays in. If the coach objects, that triggers another "get out" clause.
Throughout all this, the rival club that initiated the process by offering more money is allowed to sit back and claim to be entirely neutral. The player who lacks the basic decency to honour his contract is allowed to play the victim. The original club, which did nothing more than try to enforce its legal rights and remained prepared to welcome the player back, is vilified as mean and accused of forcing a good player out of the WAFL.
Nothing one-sided about any of that, is there?
