Not a big fan of Poms but will defend the constitutional monarchy and legal system that was inherited from them and works bloody well in this country.

Remember they were quick to drop us in the sixties when they wanted to join the common market.

My greatest worry about the flag is that the feelgood tossers will try and transpose the Jack with another flag or a fricken boomerang.

And along came Swandog. If you didn’t know there is no such thing as an aboriginal nation, they are just a composite group of different totem tribes and therefore having a race icon on a national flag would be an insult to ALL Australians.

So are you saying that aboriginal people are false or something? I think we should acknowledge the country's first inhabitants. Yes they would probably still live in primitive conditions it wasn't for European settlement but not acknowledging Aboriginal people is an insult to them!

Swandog, if you do your anthropological research you’ll know the original Sapien inhabitants in Australia were replaced a long time ago by two other migrations firstly the Melanesian and then the Austronesian. So what you think may be the original inhabitants are either the second or third.

And you want to put an icon that represents the second and third invasion of this country in place of an icon that represents the fourth invasion.

Interesting!!

My other issue is that you said “I think” and there lies the problem.

Too many people want to put their warm and fuzzys into places they don’t belong, like the flag, without doing the proper research and drawing the right conclusions.

How about we stop bringing up emotional warm and fuzzys that divide the country and stick with the things that actually unite this country.

Ok then smart researched man, who were the inhabitants of this country when The Poms decided to take over and settle?
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

Australia as we know it today did not exist prior to British settlement, it was a collection of tribes that were nomadic and drifted in certain areas, they fought amongst themselves as well as traded in stones and sticks, as someone else stated the tribes that are here now are just the last of a succesion of migration moves from Asia and the pacific that forced out prior waves. Aboriginals never had nation states had no King, Queen or recognizable form of government , or an Army, currency written language, permanent agriculture, unlike the Maori Zulu North American Natives Even the tribes of PNG had many of these features, so I cannot see on what basis and form they should be recognized on the Australian flag as we were formed in 1901 by a group of British Colonies under the British Crown.

The USA Canada NZ and others all have natives peoples who have fought wars gained treaties and formed nations , none are represented on their respective national flags. Apart from making no historical or legal sense for placing the Aboriginal flag on our flag , it actually a shit house looking flag anyway , and blacks not a good colour to have on anyflag.

Btw Flags never existed in tradional Aboriginal culture and were introduced to Australia by the British anyway.

Canada's First Nation people aren't represented on their flag, but they have a huge influence on Canadian people, land management and their economy. I had a very interesting chat with a First Nation average Jane. She wasn't interested in being represented on her country's flag. What her family wanted was equalisation with the huge amount of funds given to and controlled by their Chieftains who run tribal councils. Guess who get the cream and who gets the curds??? How many of our Aboriginals want this same equality?
As for the flag, I would like to see our it changed to represent modern Australia, but am fairly circumspect about becoming a republic.

This has to be the funniest thread I have ever read on here. If anything this vote will help the Anglophile element in Australia rather than the republican crowd. Well done to the British.

mikeh that is very much the point; the Scots voted overwhelmingly to stay in EU and that is wehre they will be able to get the infrastructure funding and financial wherewthal. Obviously the Labour Party want Scotland to stay in the UK to ensure that they have a chance to form government.

gtr D Trump is NOT a world leader; he is a wannabe world leader.

For those who have completely misconstrued my initial comment let me clarify the position. WHEN, and not if, Scotland leaves the UK it would seem to me that the UK flag it would be somewhat anomalous to keep the St David's Cross in the flag when Scotland is no longer part of the UK. By extension, it would seem strange for Australia to continue to have an obsolete version of the UK flag as part of its flag.

Well if the below made me an Anglophile when I was young, I’m happy.

First car was a Rover 90, then Humber supersnipe, Austin freeway, Mini Minor plus BSA motorbikes.

Cornish pasties, fish and chips, Worchester sauce, crumpets, bubble and squeak, scones, Welsh rarebit, mince pie, bread and butter pudding, porridge, any sandwich.

Benny Hill, Dads Army, Two Ronnies, Frost Report, Dr Who, the Saint.

H G Wells, Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle.

Too much British music to list.

The Ark Royal aircraft carrier in Freo harbour.

Barbara Windsor, Lulu, miniskirts.
Ah bugger it, bit later, but I’ve got to throw in Samantha Fox.
