I viewed on the television this evening whereby an alliance of so called top Australians has unveiled a new national sporting flag and plans to use it to gatecrash major sporting events. The white stars of the southern cross on the dark blue background, with a green and gold vertical strip on the left side encompass the design. The new flag will be pitched to flying at sporting events only, but the ausflag alliance hopes to use it to change attitudes and eventually knock the Union Jack off the official flag with another design. But the Australian National Flag Association, which supports the current design, said it was a shame that each national day was wasted on a call for a new flag. I personally like the current flag we now have and have had for over 100 years. I think there are more pressing problems in society like the very high cost of living and the pressure it brings, high crime rates, government services being cut back whilst increasing taxes and charges, all the traffic congestion etcetera etcetera etcetera and I could go on and on. Why not sought out the many important issues that face our society? All this talk of changing a flag is not helpful in solving many of the current problems that modern society is facing.

I agree! Do not change the flag! People haved died for it and currently serving under it, im a Monachist who likes the stability of the Westminster style of Governance and the Queen as our head of state.
We are cultural lightweights in terms of recorded history in this country compared to the rest of the world (an observation, not a critisism), discard the Monarchy and we have even less IMO, and really if there was ever going to be a change it should be the Aboriginal flag in the corner..but dont change it i reckon!!
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

Nah time to part ways with the Union Jack.

I find it embarrassing to see it on our flag and another dozen or so around the world as well.

The Canucks had the right idea. Something that represents them. Their Provinces still have the Union Jack on them and that's fine but the Maple Leaf is instantly recognisable.

The French who run Canada have always hated the British especially since the World wars. It is no wonder they got rid of the flag.. For that matter so did the Yanks.
I am happy with the Flag the way it is in Aussie.
If you dont like it go and live in Canada or The USA...

The French don't run Canada Cardy.

They have their own separate province called Quebec.

The other provinces still have the union jack on their flags and do not hate Britain.

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't like the Union Jack on our flag and that's fair enough but these are the reasons why.

Britain doesn't care for australia and never did.

It was only colonised in 1788 by Britain after the Poms lost control of it's prize colony - America - after the american War of Independence in 1783.

Before then, Britain had no intention in colonising Australia for it believed that there was nothing of value to be found here.

Even then, the Brits had a couple of cracks at getting Argentina from the Spanish as it was their preferred next best option. They failed at that. (Although, they forced their way in by financial takeover for many many decades - thus they have Harrods, rugby, lawn bowls, cricket, red phone and post boxes and about 40 Buenos Aires suburbs with Anglo names)

When they did eventually commit to Australia, it was mainly to house so called criminals from East London and Ireland.

Along the way, the British Redcoats managed to kill off many thousands of Aboriginals and made life as difficult as possible for the prisoners.

The final straw for me was when Churchill put unreasonable pressure on Australian Prime Minister John Curtin when the Aussie PM insisted that his troops must come to PNG to stop the Japanese invasion of Australia.

Thankfully, Curtin did not bow to the threats made by Churchill (And Roosevelt) but it drove him to an early grave (And saved Australia)

So why does Britain deserve to have "it's" symbol of nationalism on our flag after all that?

Sorry but I can't fathom why people wouldn't want to change.

And why would I go to Canada to live? I'm australian. Was born here.

I don't mind the current flag, its instantly recognisable, and the Union Jack only identifies as a former British dumping ground - nothing more in my opinion. The Australian flag wasn't even designed by an Aussie. A Kiwi did it.

Whilst true that Australian's have fought and died under the flag, for the most part this has only been the few last decades or so. Up until then (early 1980's) we were British subjects. We quite often during the two world wars went under the Union Jack.

Back in 1984, I remember in school singing God save the Queen, then the shitful national anthem that we sing now. Others here in NSW (my age) have said they did the same, so it was Australia wide.

Our national colours were changed in 1984 from Red, White & Blue to the Green & Gold.

I believe the true Australian flag should have been the one flown at Eureka. This is the first time in History that men of all nations came together, swore an oath to be Australian.

It is unfortunate that the communists, BLF and other's have claimed and tarnished the real Australian flag in this way.

Changing the flag is not going to change anything. Look at the world flags together in a book, and it would have to be one of the most appealing.

73% of the population is still Anglo-Celtic, this is supposed to drop to 66% by 2025. Putting the 1% Aboriginal race flag in the corner will not solve anything. There are other ethnic groups with a bigger percentage.

The Anglo-Celtic percentage is probably higher in Scots and Irish, than it is English due to the dumping of the so called scum, so lets use one of the alternative Union Jacks with the Cross of St. Andrew and St. Patrick being more prominent than St. George..

Dunno... do we really need to change it? very messy with all the if and buts...

Its the Australian Flag, its who we are, and what generations gone and to come in this nation make it represent.

yep...time to take the union jack from our flag. we have little or no reliance on Gt Britain so can't understand why we still have the queen as our monarch and include the UJ on our flag. don't necessarily agree with the aboriginal emblem as part of our flag either given they make up less than 5% of the population...one Australian flag for all Australians I say.

I'm sure it will go. It will soon be seen as politically incorrect, just like your avatar. I'm not talking about Julia's politics being incorrect, just that you have two red heads, one Welsh, and the clown with a Scottish name... Then again, these have been politically incorrect for the last 2,000 years.

Can we change the anthem first? It's very out of touch.
