The RUNDOWN
THE RUNDOWN

Suffered a big blow when hugely talented yet trouble-plagued all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury, and a nail was seemingly hammered into the coffin when his brother Shaun was also ruled out after hurting his hamstring in England. However, they look to have a nicely balanced team and one which is stacked with spin bowlers (Ashton Agar, Brad Hogg, Michael Beer and Ashton Turner) which should work well in the conditions of the sub-continent. Will need to avoid the off-field strife of their tumultuous Champions League campaign in South Africa last year but their discipline seems to have improved hugely under coach Justin Langer. Do look to be short of big-hitting batsman, with the loss of the Marsh brothers leaving the Scorchers with a huge battle to make the finals.

HOW WILL THEY GO

Much the same as Brisbane Heat. Far from hopeless but with the Marsh brothers out injured they are severely lacking a bit of depth, especially in their batting ranks, for when the whips are cracking at the business end of the tournament.

Preview of tonights game

The Perth Scorchers will today aim to shatter a formidable winning streak from their opponents when they take on the Otago Volts at the Karbonn Smart Champions League Twenty20.

Today’s game marks the second of the CLT20 campaign for the Scorchers, after their opener against Highveld Lions in Ahmedabad was washed out and abandoned on Monday night.

The team has since travelled to Jaipur and will tackle the Volts at Sawai Masingh Stadium in what is looming as a crucial match for both sides.

The rain-effected matches of Ahmedabad have left the Group A pool in a logjam, with Rajasthan Royals leading on four points and the other four teams on two.

The unlucky number 13 hovers over the heads of players for this match, with it representing the winning streak of the Volts prior to their game being washed out on Monday as well. However, it also represents a reminder for the Scorchers of the level of talent the Perth team is up against.

Opener Brendon McCullum leads the New Zealand qualifying side and is a constant danger at the crease and was in fine form through the qualifiers and will be ably supported by Hamish Rutherford and Ryan ten Doeschate.

The quick wicket will also appeal to the Volts pace battery of Ian Butler, Neil Wagner and James McMillan.

The Scorchers will again play their cards close to their chest, electing not to release their lineup until the toss, but youth will again be a factor, after Ashton Agar, Joel Paris and Ashton Turner all made their T20 debuts two days ago.

Team veteran Brad Hogg, who knows the Sawai Masingh Stadium pitch well, having been a part of home team Rajasthan’s makeup in the IPL, gave his insight into the ground, before stating the inexperience of the Scorchers was far from a concern.

“I think the Jaipur wicket is very similar to what we grow up on in Perth; a fast bouncy wicket,” Hogg said.

“This one is skiddy and probably the only difference between this one and the WACA is the variable bounce.

“We’re prepared for it and I’m quite sure our younger players will cope with the conditions.

“The way that these younger players have trained, approached the game, the way that they’ve prepared, (has shown me) I’m still learning from the game.

“We’ve got a young team, they’ve got nothing to lose, they’re out here to learn, but they’re very well disciplined and they want to achieve great things.

“We’re not easybeats in this competition at the present moment.”

The Scorchers follow the today’s game with a match against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday 29 September, before finishing their group clashes against Mumbai Indians on 2 October.
