Mate, that site has been up for sale for decades, and the heritage listing has come and gone like the wind, Mc Teirnan removed it years back when she was minister and apparently it is now been put back on.

There is a massive amount of remedial work to do - I have know since I was a kid that that the cooling ponds are full of PCBs and Lead, there is also asbestos and residual coal dust. Personally I would not live there.

On top of that the SEC Substation needs to be moved.

But to sell that land in a back room deal in 8 days for $1 is as shonky as heck.

BC do you recall about 10 years ago a plan to turn it into a Massive Ocean Aquarium ?
 

No mate...I don't recall that. I drive past it to go down to my local Woolies at Port Coogee and wonder at the lengths some people will go to put up graffiti. Whoever it was that did the stuff up the top is a braver man than me that's for sure.

It only seems like yesterday that all four of its massive stacks were pumping out collie coal smoke - it was a permanent fixture for us Beacy kids on the horizon.

Its incredible to think it has now been abandoned longer than it operated.

yep the ubran artists love those derelict sites, one bloke got killed there a couple of years ago climbing over the place.

I can see this being another hair raising massive fail by government that will cost tax payers a fortune. They are giving it away because it will be a massive job to build something spectacular while retaining the original structure and look and as Southerner says deal with contamination.

If government has anything to do with it contract wise you can guarantee there will be only one winner, the winning contractor. Another Perth Children’s Hospital in the making.

Agree Southy - would not go anywhere near it.

Talking white elephants, I see Pettits Palace in the center of Fremantle has come to a screaming hault, after Pindan went bust and workers walked out - still a heap to finish of this white elephant - God knows how much money has been lost. and how much longer the FCC will be camped at Fremantle Oval holding up the re development of the ground.

Mate...you know as well as I do that losing millions of ratepayer's $ doesn't really matter to the FCC as long as they are successful in renaming a few streets to make them all feel better.
