wag are you suggesting that is another reason why one should dislike the Eagles?

For all the sanctimonious comments about the importance of 26th January, may I point out that we have NOT ALWAYS celebrated Australia Day on the 26th January in Western Australia. I too am old enough to remember that there was a long week end near the end of January; most times the Australia Day Public Holiday was NOT on the 26th January.

Yeah , big deal - so am I - it actually wasn't that long ago it was moved to the actual day for the public holiday to be held, previously it was preferred by the unions that a long weekend be held with the day being the closest Monday to the actual 26th for the day off, HOWEVER Australia Day itself was always the 26th.

So what the Freo Council is doing is certainly not UNPRECEDENTED.

Err , yes it is, it was the public holiday that was held on the monday only as a holiday, Australia Day was always on the 26th. And tne day was marked nationaly on the same day, not separately in fiefdoms of breakaway mungbeen morons.

Swan42, the argument is not about what day we celebrate the Australia Day holiday.

It is entirely about the City of Fremantle on behalf of their ratepayers making a statement the Fremantle Council WILL NOT acknowledge Australia Day as a day worthy of national celebration, or even call the day Australia Day.

Not only has Brad Pettit and his band of left wing loonies chosen not to celebrate the day, they have even changed the NAME in favour of a "culturally-inclusive alternative" new event, called ONE DAY as "an opportunity for all Australians (Councillors) to come together and celebrate the multicultural diversity of our country".

For the Mayor of our 2nd largest City to cancel our National Day to appease a vocal minority who have done absolutely nothing to advance the aboriginal cause is an absolute disgrace and the sooner this bunch of morons is thrown out of office the better.

Look out Christmas Day and Easter are next on the list, we all know what section of the community those days of celebration might offend!!

I see the Federal Government have rightfully said if the Freo council doesn't hold its citizenship ceremony of Australia Day, they wont allow them the power to confirm citizenship or provide funding for the day.

yep..these clowns are a joke. Pettitt conveniently forgets to mention the city of Freo is like a ghost town with Myers gone, Woolies gone, Coles about to go, Dick Smith plus about 20 other business all gone...he had to beg with the state govt to relocate some public servants to King Square otherwise it would have been as dead as a doornail. the only increase has been in assaults, stabbings, unruly behaviour and drunken disorder....I've lived in and around Freo all my life but am of the opinion the sooner these morons are voted out the better. the fact Pettitt considered running for the Greens at the last election says it all.

spot on , I was born there and lived there 50 years, come from a 5th generation freo family that moved there early 1900's , fair dinkum its the worst I have ever seen it, like you say retail is stuffed, compared to growing up there in the 60s and 70s The days of Coles, Pellews, Swanseas, Urquats, Charlie Craters, Woolworths, Coles x 2, Myer, Freecorns, Archie Martins, Ajax, Watsonia,
and many more, the place is like a ghost town bar, deros, drugged up zoned out hippies and now you have this halfwit closing down Australia Day bar a few no hopers and extremists on - One Brain Cell Day.
