Swans really got out of jail today, Perth were all over us like a rash for the first quarter and a half and we were 33 points down at one stage in the 2nd quarter. I thought we were looking down the barrel especially since we had lost Riggio and Perth had also wasted a few opportunities. The Demons could have been 8 goals up if they had kicked straight. The simple fact was that Perth came to play and Swans didn't so we found ourselves in the position of having to play catch up footy.

Credit to the Demons who really gave it a crack today and but for a lapse in the 3rd quarter which let us back into the game, they would have got across the line. They were still pressurising Swans in the last 5 minutes of the game but just lacked the finesse and finishing skills of a Ricky Cary or Jamie Bennell.

Our big guys were very good today, particularly Gault who I thought had his best game of 2017. Howard did a lot of good things ( apparently was reported though, did anyone see the incident?) Ugle was very steady, Faulkner was excellent in conditions that were tailor made for him. Ellard and Crowley added grunt to the midfield. Stewart showed a bit of magic at times and I thought Jesse Manton was prominent and added value to the team.

Perth were gallant and they certainly had as much, if not more supply from their midfield into the forward line. They found it tough to get space in their forward line after the first quarter against our very well organised defence, they only kicked 4-7 in the last 3 quarters. Perth have a good one there in number 14 Corey Byrne. He has a lot of footy smarts. Jones was prolific as usual, I also liked Narrier (25) who looks a talented player.

Overall we were lucky to walk out of there with the 4 points and it was a better day given two of our main finals rivals lost. It was a gutsy effort by the players to get back into it with two players down in the 2nd half.

Swans will need to work on getting a faster start as we won't always be able to get back into games like we did today. Pleasing that Swans won all three grades today and I assume there will be a few spots opened up in the league next week as Riggio and Coniglio would be out you would imagine. Coniglio's in particular looked bad and he may be out for a while.

As far as their start was concerned don't forget how many goals they got from frees inside 50 early and like Harding referenced at HT and after the game "who knows how many of those frees were actually there?" We were in control the majority of the day, two men down in some of the shittiest conditions we have had which always tightens up contests. Valuable 4 points and we move on with bigger fish to fry after cleansweeping Perth in 2017. Lots of improvment is there in our squad. Ugle my best today. Faulky courageous and my 2nd best.
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

I am not sure what stat BH is referring to. I do believe that Perth received about 5 free kicks inside their 50m attacking ar i n the first quarter. We received 3 free kicks forward of the centre line in the first half and one of those free kicks was barely forward of centre.

Also, one could question the ability of umpires to judge the distance required for a mark when one of them yesterday awarded a 50 metre penalty 51 metres from goals and placed the player on the mark 10 metres out.

With respect to Perth's performance yesterday. Their inability to convert some very simple chances cost them dearly yesterday.

Some observations:

It was an "interesting" game from Notte yesterday. It was good to see that in the last quarter he realised that it was not a day for high marks and decided to start spoiling rather than going for the speccy mark.

It was good to see Taryce get back to his true form.

Is there a reason that players refuse to shepherd rather than go and try to get a cheap stat as happened in the last quarter yesterday?

The thing that got me was, their tendency to pick out the Tiggies and ignore the obvious ones all day.Maddening!:woohoo:

Whilst I accept that there is no requirement for there to be an equal number of free kicks for each team in their forward lines it is remarkable that we get the vast majority of our free kicks backward of centre and particularly in our defensive arc and remarkably often late in the match.

Im not sure Perth could complain about the umpiring yesterday Grassy as 42 has pointed out above 6 of your goals were from free kicks inside 50 and many others you just missed.
The most staggering tho was in the 3rd qtr were Notte was unceremoniously just thrown out of a marking contest without being allowed to even contest the ball in the air, then Ugle was taken high from the crumb off that very same contest inexplicably both were called play on and then a second later 42s favourite umpire picks out the softest in the back free for Papertalk 25m out dead in front who duly saluted...Stevie Wonder would have seen the first 2 frees that 42s fav ump just completely ignored!

Now I'm not the sharpest tool on the bench but one would think after having a good win in the ressies yesterday Erceg, Hughes and Mad Dogs favourite player Smirk would have the common sense not to grab a pint each and head to the stand directly in front of the coaches box. I'm all for celebrating a good win but when you are trying to break in to the league side you want to be seen as doing everything right, Recovery being one of the big priorities when sitting on the cusp of league selection...or maybe they've just given up on league footy this year under Harding. Before you say it " I know" it's only a beer but perception is everything when you're not in the side
