Baz: Yep, it was done feairly too, so if you arrived before, 1986, you kept your rights. Menzies was a big on the British thing, as you know, especially in regards passports. Soon as he get back in to office, he insistted that both Australian and British be written on our passports, as it was the law; and he had a habit of winning elections, which would suggest that most of the Australian population agreed with him.

It is interestting that the leader of the British greens is an Australian to this day.

This all started with some expat Kiwi trying to catch Hinch out.Who is also a Kiwi by berth. But got two Greens instead.Don't know much about the Qld lady. But Ludlem is a huge blow for the Greens in Wa.In the last Senate electron had the highest personal vote of all Wa Senators.Greens will struggle without Scott in Wa.
This might open a can of worms. There is 24 MP's or Senators that are not Australian born.

From what was saidit not only applies to those with dual citizenship; it also applies to those who may through their parents or grand parents have the ability to gain dual citizenship.

I am by no means an expert. It is my understanding that for the two ineligible senators there will be a recount and most likely there next Green candidate in the ticket will be elected. If the two ineligible senators relinquish their dual citizenship and renounce the potential to acquire dual citizenship, then if there is a casual vacancy then the Greens could nominate either to fill the casual vacancy or they could nominate for the next Senate election.

I would suspect the Libs and Nats would be on tenterhooks lest one of them in the House of Reps is ineligible.

Bazza what an absolutely disgraceful comment. Are you the type of person who complains when a mother breastfeeds in public?

While I'm no particular fan of the Greens, it seems ludicrous that the rules are so rigid . Surely a Senator or HoR member who's eligibility has been challenged for this reason, should have a timeframe of say 45 days to rectify the situation, during that time they must take an unpaid leave of absence until it is sorted. If they cant sort it within the timeframe then they are gonski for good.

Anyway Q and A will be running out of guests at this rate.

Arkroyal, its a big issue as far at the Australian Constitution goes, its illegal to do it.

Has anyone checked if Shanghai Sam has renounced his Iranian citizenship yet? My guess is no.

Quote of the Year.

When asked if he still held Iranian citizenship, Labor Senator Sam Dastyari replied: "I'm not that friggin' stupid"
