In 2016 the Shute Sheild was in massive decline ,like the WAFL ,with only 5000 people turning up to their Grand Final 2016. 2 people , who were long time NSWRugby Union fans and marketing guns ,took over the marketing of the comp and gave it it unprecedented promotions spending a lot of money on promoting the comp. it had massive billboards all over Sydney advertising the comp , TV ads newspaper radio etc. It had an immediate effect. The 2017 grand final got 13000 and the 2018 Grand Final got 14000. Some home and away games between traditional clubs I.e Randwick , Manly , Gordon etc we’re getting 8000-10000 . A semi final between Manly and Randwick got 15000. Sponsorship tripled for some clubs all on the back of this massive promotional campaign.
It has got to the point now that Fox and Kayo are throwing money at the comp and want to cover every game . Currently 7mate covers the comp same as here.
A massive amount of money has been spent promoting the comp and it is reaping huge dividends.
Surely this can be done to rejuvenate the WAFL.

Very interesting. Few would disagree an aggressive, well targeted advertising blitz could do wonders to revive interest in the WAFL. Unfortunately, that's not the WAFC agenda. It wants a production line for the AFL and they get that at minimum cost right now.

Given there is no chance that the WAFC will throw any money at the comp, we will need someone or some group to step in as happened with the Shute Shield comp, someone with the marketing nous and and a few million spare would be needed. Maybe we can entice Twiggy to love WAFL as much as he loves his rugby.

Or sell the two WA AFL club licenses, disband the WAFC and delink from the AFL.

Daz, did the SANFL sell their 2 licences back to the AFL? They seem to do most financial things well. Would like to know what they would be worth $30-40 mill each? A lot could be done with that but no doubt a big lump of that will go into the WAFC boards pockets and increased promo of AFL & AFLW, might see a trickle down to the WAFL and grass roots footy.

What a shame the WAFC dont have a mindset like the SANFL who are proud of their historic comp, promote it and get 30k plus at the GF's, it's not rocket surgery as one Glen Jackovich used to say!!

Exactly right Daz, and this is what I have been advocating for years, its the only hope for the WAFL to have any real independent future, other than that its tagging along not even treading water but sinking.

The SANFL sold them back to the clubs for an absolute pittance.

The Eagles have $60m In cash in the bank, one of the biggest brands in the AFL, are a veritable money making machine and have a state market. Their license would be worth $100-150m without even thinking. I reckon the Dockers license, including goodwill would be worth half that, or maybe even less at $50m.

$200m head start to an independent WAFL. I like that idea.

There was about 19 million banked by the SANFL but the Adelaide Oval got redeveloped with funds from the Viccos (in partnership with the SACA of course) and there was another 5 or 10 million that the SANFL invested into their grass roots
in cash terms it was around 30 million plus the new Oval job

Spot on mate, wack that in the WAFL Capital Trust Fund, even if you got 5% PA you would be in front of the current shambles.

Independent , piss the WAFC off - run things the way we want without any AFL/WAFC interference, let them pay for womens bs or any other pet project.

Get rid of peel , and the afl eagles.

renovate our grounds, attract players, get a decent media deal.

Miles in front.

The other option would be to float both of them publicly, you might end up with a bigger sum raised, pay out the WAFL, wind up the WAFC and its constitution, the two Pty Ltd, go there separate ways. And the WAFL goes its.

Southerner, the other massive cash cow for the SANFL and it's clubs has been the massive land holdings at the old Football park out at Westlakes, the SANFL owned that lock stock, and have been carving out land subdivisions over recent years with profit dividends of around $100k going to each of the clubs, but only on the condition that the clubs finances are in order, a Joondy/WP situation would preclude a club receiving the divvy.

The SANFL share of the Football Park land is going to run out in course but getting big dollars to go halves with Cricket was what they ended up being after
The Viccos just had eyes for that pair of licences regardless of the cost

Just on the Pokies - I think it was West Adelaide who got hurt by them & maybe a couple of others too
