Many of us who grew up watching footy from the late 1970s to the 90s often hark back and pine for the style of footy from those days which was fast flowing, skilful, attacking minded with many goals the priority and was actually attractive to watch rather than the boring, defensive minded, congestion style of this last decade which to be brutally honest even as a WAFL lover has had me rethinking and questioning whether I really enjoy watching the game anymore!

Excellent observation BH.The Swans 8 goal games of the last few years ,have driven me nuts.We just don't have the type of players to exploit the massive open gaps.

You are not wrong mate in 2016 where we could only kick 2 or 3 goals in games I was astounded and horrified as to how low we could go after witnessing firsthand those halcyon scoring days from 79-85.

Bh,gtr, as you would know sd won one game with the following score line

27.32
8.15

The game has changed that mauch, i am afraid that, subi's 8.15, as you both know, would win many games today.

This story/ ies in one form or other has been done to death on here over the years. From what I can see there is no positivity. Although I suppose the journalist concerned is trying to bring it into the open. Hope I'm wrong but all too late! More to the point I think the Wafl has lost relevancy going by the very poor attendance figures from last season. And all the other all too familiar issues that need addressing l o n g before this. The loss of sponsorship dollars and the very poor media coverage is another HUGE issue.
What else can one say that hasn't already been said previously?

I have posted about this on another thread . The Shute Sheild is the WAFL equvilant of Rugby Union in Sydney. In 2016 the Shute Sheild was in massive decline ,like the WAFL ,with only 5000 people turning up to their Grand Final 2016. 2 people , who were long time NSWRugby Union fans and marketing guns ,took over the marketing of the comp and gave it it unprecedented promotions spending a lot of money on promoting the comp. it had massive billboards all over Sydney advertising the comp , TV ads newspaper radio etc. It had an immediate effect. The 2017 grand final got 13000 and the 2018 Grand Final got 14000. Some home and away games between traditional clubs I.e Randwick , Manly , Gordon etc we’re getting 8000-10000 . A semi final between Manly and Randwick got 15000. Sponsorship tripled for some clubs all on the back of this massive promotional campaign.
It has got to the point now that Fox and Kayo are throwing money at the comp and want to cover every game . Currently 7mate covers the comp same as here.
A massive amount of money has been spent promoting the comp and it is reaping huge dividends.
Surely this can be done to rejuvenate the WAFL.

Very interesting. Few would disagree an aggressive, well targeted advertising blitz could do wonders to revive interest in the WAFL. Unfortunately, that's not the WAFC agenda. It wants a production line for the AFL and they get that at minimum cost right now.

the WAFC and Ch7 will also not promote against their main cash cow - WCE and to some extent Freo.
the most exposure the WAFL ever gets is when an Eagle story is involved.
look at the reviews of games, Eagles and Dockers nobodies get a write up on how the performed even when they play reserves.
at least the WAFC has tried to even up the comp by reining in Subi, they will hopefully lead to a better comp and attract more spectators through the gate and on tv.

100 per cent correct MO on the conflict of interest -- in a way there is not a crisis, because they will always subsidise the competiton.

Given there is no chance that the WAFC will throw any money at the comp, we will need someone or some group to step in as happened with the Shute Shield comp, someone with the marketing nous and and a few million spare would be needed. Maybe we can entice Twiggy to love WAFL as much as he loves his rugby.

All true, but it wont happen here, the WAFC dont want to spend money on pushing another product up against the Eagles and Dockers, especially given the dockers are having trouble attracting members as it is.

Not sure if you are aware but Foxtel have just announced the are dropping Rugby Union, sounds like Optus are picking it up with a bigger deal.
