The following year, according to the source, we are the WAFL again until they changed it to Westar in 1997.

I might be wrong but I vaguely remember something along those lines.
The late 80's or early 90's was known as the Western Australia State Football League? I think?
But I'm sure someone would know for certain. As my memory is a bit foggy at my age.
I remember the silly westar rules naming but that was later.

it was always the WANFL it was only dropped for the Viccos to rename itself but it is still the SANFL over the southern border

You are correct its the WASFL and we won the Pepsi cup trophy that day which was a moulded replica of a Kevin Caton grab as well. I think it was from 1990-93

Thanks Swandog -- I remember the pepsi cup now that you mention it.

The name was changed back to WAFL at the end of the 19990 season as it caused confusion with the Sunday FL, which was still strong at the time.

WAFL (1908-1929)
WANFL (1930-1979)
WAFL (1980 -1989)
WASFL (1990)
WAFL (1991-1996)
Westar Rules (1997-2000)
WAFL (2001 onwards)

I so miss the Weststar Rules days.
Bring in a new crap team, further dilute a diluted competition.
Change the competition name to further alienate traditional supporters.
Dorrington stretched his KPI’s that year.
