And Swans, (131-105-1) and you're quickly evening up the ledger against Perth (164-169)

Ric: thanks, I forgot about Swans. I think it is because I grew up in era where we never beat SD -- 1979-85 -- getting as close as five points in 1981.

Can you find any other examples of the bottom side beatting the top side? I can't remember it happening.

That era is long gone unfortunately AR. :(
I still remember that day in 84 against Perth & against Subi in about Rd 6 85 as they were my first losses against both sides after I started following Swans in 79 as a toddler.

Swans beat the eventual premiers Peel Thunder at Rushton Park last year but Peel were not the top team on the ladder at any stage of the year and we all know why they won last years flag.

BH: that is true, but they are memories which will always be with you. Should be a good game this week too.

mikeh, beautifully spotted and so true -- it is in the book as they say.

Swans only won 20 in a row against Subiaco in the same period and much like you BH I can't stand the fact we hardly ever beat Subiaco any more as we used to thrash them every week back when we were kids.

I can think of too many of the top of my head, I'll run a few queries on my database tonight see what I can find.

ArkRoyal your questions always get me thinking and you have succeeded yet again. I recall a match when I was young that was one of the biggest boilovers at the time. It was at Bassendean and it was between East Perth who were on top of the ladder and Swans who were on the bottom. I wasn't there and the game was not broadcast on the radio as everybody thought the result was a foregone conclusion. I spent my afternoon listening to 6WF and the announcer was giving score updates during gaps between their broadcast match ( no doubt with George in commentary) and the horse races which Max Simmonds was calling. I remember it clearly because the game was tight all afternoon and I jumped for joy when they announced that Swans had actually upset the league leaders. Thanks to Ric's site I have located the game and it was 1971. Here is the link

mikeh: thanks for your kind words. I like chatting about the WAFL's past on here as you can tell. What a great link; a fantastic effort by Swans, readding how much EP dominatted the season; all the more so given that SD had fallen behind at three quarter time.

One thing I have noticed from these three instances -- 1971, 1978, 1979 -- is that the team which topped the ladder failled to win the premiership.

PFC/SD and 1984: What is interestting about that one is that the red and blacks beat the eventual premiers.

ric: thanks to you too: just think of the 40.11 game while you do your research. You should feel better.

Yep perth finished las and beat premier in 1984

Another time I recall is 2001 Swans then 9th win just 1 win defeated Claremont who were then and finished top of the ladder, it was round 19 a bloke called Scott Cummings kicked 5 - Claremont finished top but didn't even make the GF that year.

I remember a game in 1988 also vs Claremont who were on a massive winning streak at the time dating back to the previous season and we were that seasons wooden spooners where we almost caused a boilover except a soft free kick was paid just before the final siren to one of the O'Connoll boys who duly levelled the scores as the siren went!
