Very good question that needs an answer.

"Okay BC how well do you think the WAFC is going in maintaining the viability of the WAFL clubs and competition?"

they will have no affinity with a WAFL club so will has less incentive to stay on if they dont get drafted.

Changing the current colts model and removing their affiliation with the WAFL clubs is 2 separate proposals.

Mcbob so what do you think is going to happen to the colts' competition?

well astro...the fact the WAFC has engaged BCG to do a no holds barred review prior to a major cut in revenue streams when the move is made to the new stadium is a positive. we might not like the outcomes but in all likelihood the $ granted to WAFL clubs by the WAFC is going to be reduced significantly. so that means difficult decisions will have to be made to keep the comp afloat. let's wait and see what comes out of the review before we cut the WAFC off at the knees.

Do i think that should involve removing it from the WAFL clubs? No, but would shake it up.

Ive been away for a few years but back when i was involved, the development pathway from juniors to your district colts was a mess. My personal experience with EP back in the day, they had hard time getting the kids to go through the entire junior pathway then make the step up to colts. Many promising prospects just fade away.

From what i can see of recent times, its getting worse. How long will WA footy survive at the elite level when they have no more kids coming through? Maybe a radical change is needed?

So what exactly does a revamped colts' comp mean?

kids drop off cos all the want to do is get drafted, once they work out its unlikely and realise how hard they have to work many drop off as they dont want to play WAFL.

what has happened as the end goal has moved another step from playing WAFL to AFL for kids and the percentage of kids who get drafted will always be small..
junior comps are dwindling every year from 15 onwards and its nothing to do with the WAFL clubs

Ill let you know in March when i read it

But getting more juniors to continue through to colts would have to be the first step.

according to Hagdorn in the West $29m has been granted to WP, SD and Claremont by the govt over the years....no wonder footy is broke.

Hagdorn doesnt write for the West and his claim in the WA Today article no longer appears so looks like he got mixed up there.

maybe he was talking about govt contribtution to the redevelopment projects for those grounds ?
its certainly not footy money from the WAFC.
