Just in relation to a post on the Subi forum. Got me thinking how outspoken the media used to be. Nobody was spared. Remember these characters.

Fiery Freddie Woods
Fiery Fred Castledine
The Hood
Grumpy Mick Cronin
Bob Cribb
Mal Brown
Percy Johnson
Alan East
Mark "Jacko" Jackson
John Dethridge
John Todd
Keith Slater
Acerbic Eric Sarich
Jack Ensor

It's all very gentile nowadays in comparison.

What a great list LH, not having men that weren't afraid to 'tell it like it is' around today is probably a small part of the demise of the WAFL.
Don't forget Marty MaDonald. And of course there was the redoubtable Steve Marsh...THERE IS NO DERBY OTHER THAN THE FREMANTLE DERBY!!!!!!!!!! Told it like it was

Great list mate ...haha The Hood from the former brilliant Westside Football ..now who was The Hood??? I had a feeling back in the early 80's it was Bob Cribb but was told many years ago later it could have been Alan East!

Haha..yeah..Alan East was "The Hood". He also wrote those little quips for the "Bull Oscar of the Week" in the football budget I think which you'd no doubt remember BH.

Hard to explain what they were for people who weren't around at the time but something like from April 11, 1981

Percy Johnson: "I always used to skip the front page of the daily newspapers because all it carried was problems. The sporting pages kept me sane."

Editor: It sounds like you've started to skip them too!

I think from memory the winner each week received a meal at Mama Maria's Restaurant.

I certainly do remember the "Bull Oscar of the Week" mate. One of my favourites was from Dennis Cometti in 1981 with- "...and John Duckworth must think its Guy Fawkes Night as he gets rid of two Krakouers" :cheer:

Other favourites from the Footy Budget back in those days were-
Barrackers Best
Sheraton Footballer of the Year
Football Flashbacks
Ampol Miss Football Girl of the Week ;)
Footballs Social Scene
Lotto National Scoreboard

Great memories from great days in WA footy. :)

The greatest football commentator of all time the late great Frank Sparrow.

Others from the early 80's on TV, Radio & Print were- Neil Garland, Phil Mulcahy, Peter Van Helden, Mother Brown, Bill Valli, Keith Slater, Wayne Harvey, John Rogers, John O'Connoll, Arthur Marshall, Mike McCann.....

Yeah I was a big fan of Frank Sparrow.

And remember around that time Brian Thirley? He was also a favourite of mine.

Mike McCann was good. Still is I guess.

Also a commentator who went and did the races. Name escapes me. Also wrote for Westside Football for a while.

Haaa  Mother Brown - another Westside columnist. Classic stuff.
