However it leads to a bigger question. Given the population of the metro area is apparently said to be 1.5 million people, how is it that not even a thousand can turn up for a big footy match?

Very good question WAG and one I really don't have an answer to. The drop off in crowds this year has been quite alarming for mine and if it wasn't for the international day at West Perth ( where quite a number of people were let in free) the figures would look even more sick.

Perhaps it starts with all the clubs dong their version of WP's 'international day'. You can forget all the 'I used to people' whom once followed the competition. The real problem, as a hole, is that the country has no ethos to underpin 'second tier sport'. I follow a soccer club which is at the bottom of the second division, has failed to win in a month, and still 22,000 turned up for the last match.

Good point Arkroyal, I think WA people in particular are front running big end of town fans, WA have no interest in second tiers, unlike SA that still does well.

Sadly WAG it is actually worse as Perth's population ticked over the 2 million mark in 2014!

I wonder if that means is aussie rules footy itself dieing out?
To have 960 people attend an important football match is hard to fathom!
So much for aussie rules apparently being our national sport.
The Basketball games I've noticed have bumper crowds. If Perth Glory have 5000 spectators for a match, that's considered a very poor crowd. The Speedway and drag races usually have good spectator numbers too.
Yet we can't achieve a thousand to a local Wafl footy match.
Going to be very interesting listening to what the 'so called' football commission has to say on the matter! As yet, have heard nothing! The alarm bells should be ringing very loudly indeed.

Westaussieguy theres no doubt that back a few decades ago it was footy in the winter and Cricket in he summer.Local Soccer back in that era was bigger than Glory today.Azzuri,Tricolour,Windmills,Kiev+Athena.Can remember huge Soccer crowds back in the 1970"s.
One way to remember the size the Wafl and AFL once was the 1969 Grand Final..East Perth v West Perth in front of more than 51,000 fans.At that time Perths population was around about 600,000.12% of local residents went to that Footy match. In todays money over 200,000 would have to go to a GF to equal that amazing feat.

Very worrying to notice the total attendance figure for the Week 4 (9th & 10th of April) matches.
5450 persons attended the 4 matches.
That is the lowest total attendance figure in a week 4 fixture for over 10 years!

WAG despite some derogatory comments to a post I made some days back it is no great surprise to me. When you have 4 strongly supported clubs like SD, WP, P & EP sitting in the bottom 4 positions it is going to have a massive detrimental effect to overall WAFL attendances and those who think differently are kidding themselves! If the status quo continues we will have the lowest attendances in WAFL history this year and that despite 6000 attending a game due to free tickets to the international game that WP organise annually.
