Mate my understanding is they will still be doing AFL, its only VFL WAFL NTFL Sthat is getting cut, so he should be on 720 from Vic covering AFL games, its says him and Lonegan are in talks to stay on and cover AFL.

All the other stuff is gone, local footy , Womens netabll ( no big deal in my books ). They had already pulled out of SANFL. SANFL smarter than the rest I guess once again already got commercial TV coverage,

I dare say the local 720 crew that do Saturday morning radio talkback show will most likely go and you will just get the national version, bit hard with time difference though, I wonder if they will keep on Trevor Jenkins doing weekend sport on the news, somehow I doubt it, bit of relic from the past. Pity though he is the only pro they have,

Rod Willet and co will have their Saturdays free from now on.

westaussieguy wrote: Yes, a very sad day indeed. Locally, at least five journalists from the ABC's Perth newsroom face redundancy. The ABC will close its historic Wagin regional radio outpost, ending a presence in the Wheatbelt town that goes back to 1936. Across the country and overseas, more than 400 ABC employees will lose their jobs, about 10 per cent of its workforce, with some told they were redundant immediately. About 300 jobs are likely to be gone by Christmas. Investigative programmes of Four Corners, the acclaimed Australian Story, rural show Land-line, Foreign Correspondent and the Fact Check are in the firing line. Some of the biggest savings will come from the ABC sports department. Coverage of women’s sports in Australia will be devastated by cuts in ABC funding, with basketball’s WNBL and soccer’s W-League to be abandoned next year. :(

Mate the line about Wagin is BS, they have only had a Studio there since 2003, they opened it and have never been able to find any staff that wanted to go there, its been a white elephant since they built it. When they say 1936 all that was there before they built the new studio was a Transmitter, I was quite frankly shocked they had studio is Wagin, the Great Southern would easliy be covered by Albany.

Yes that's correct Bazza. The PMG acquired land in about 1935 and 6WA opened an office with a tall transmitter a couple years after. The abc radio new Wagin office opened just down the road from the old one in 2003.
Could our abc tv screens be filled with old crappy shows and repeated repeats. Such as why does one well known programme appear every week night, sometimes twice on ABC1? Is it because it is cheaper than making local programmes like state-based versions of 7.30 or documentaries.

It seems to me they waste a lot on crap local productions as well, I mean - Jonah, Middle Class Bogan etc are crap. The State edition of 7.30 was pretty ordinary, they could just run a Friday night national addition that just covers a mix of state issues, and then wack a bit more in the news, They waste a heap of The Drum..and how can they justify 1.5 Million to Paul Barry to host Media Watch? for the price of him WAFL could of been covered for a year!

It really is amusing to read some messages on here regarding the need of the ABC to 'absorb' the cuts and move on as if everything is equal. In relation to coverage of sport, they really don't have the money. You can thank Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch for that, here and in the UK. Why has Channel 9 stopped showing the Shield? It is for the same reason.

Ch 9 stopped showing the shield years and years ago, it was once on Ch 2. Kerry Packer forced the price of sporting rights up, and yes ABC and Even Ch 10 cannot affort A Grade Cricket and/or AFL anymore.

Bazza: I would be happy to support a statute passed in Canberra to have test cricket shown on the ABC. There is no way big capital should be able to monopolise an important aspect of national culture; Packer can keep the one day circus.

Mate I dont think Packer has anything to do with Crikcet anymore, he has sold off all of Ch 9 etc. Just owns Casinos now.

That is sad. To my mind part of the rationale for a government funded broadcaster is that it provides coverage of things that would not be considered commercially viable by the commercial FTA broadcasters.
That said, I think the coverage of sport has (unfortunately) long been at odds with the ABC's current direction.

If I had to gripe about one thing in regards to "Aunty," it would be the way that the same old hasbeens, having made their money (and worn out their welcome) on commercial tv, always come back to the ABC with their hands out, some "new" useless idea for a program, bludging off the public purse.
