Dear Mr Cooper,
As a life long supporter of football in WA it pains me to see the direction the WAFC have taken in regards to the WAFL. There is now a clear direction which can only be described as who cares.
The WAFL Grand Final on the weekend was a clear example of just how much AFL house control you people. It is clear that you are instructed by the AFL, the Eagles and the Dockers to not promote or put any work what so ever into the WAFL.
The build up was nothing short of a disgrace, virtually no advertising other than a small little paper spot every day. No pre game entertainment, no parade of past Champions, no flare, no hype. A high School could of put on a better show than what you guys did. You should be ashamed of yourselves for showing such disrespect to the WA football heritage and of course the two competing clubs which are 130 years old in East Perth and West Perth. There was as much hype the previous day at the A Grade Amateur Grand final.
Every one now understands that the AFL is the big ticket in town now, but surely one day a year you can put on a huge display of football heritage and remind us all about our great past. Lets face it other than sending the WAFC a cheque the Eagles and Dockers have done nothing for the WAFL, they have never helped or promoted it and you continue to let them do as they please.
The WAFL with the alignment teams is now dead, you have succeeded in your's and the AFL's wish to destroy all comps below them. That you censor peoples banners and thoughts because you don't like to hear the truth is even more disappointing.
You have been appointed to promote and look out for all area's of WA football, not just the AFL. That you can put your head on your pillow at night with the knowledge that you were in charge of a group of people that put a knife through a 130 year old competition begs belief.
That you don't care about what us supporters over 40 years old think is of course your choice. Read some of the forums and find out what we truly think. It might just be the wake up call you guys need to realise what you are doing. I doubt it though because you don't care and you showed that in spades on the weekend.
I don't expect a reply because you guys make a living out of not facing real issues. It is sad that I have to even write something like this, even sadder that something like this needs to be written. I would love to put this in the paper but you and the AFL clubs will censor it and not allow anyone to be seen to criticise you.
Congratulations on killing a 130 year old comp. It's future is now flaky at best. You just don't understand how many people you really have hurt in all of this.
Incredibly well said GWS.
As someone who is still in their 30's and is lucky enough to be attending my 3rd AFL GF this week I can honestly say nothing means more to me than my beloved Swan Districts FC winning the WAFL Premiership.
I have attended 32 of the last 33 WAFL Grand Finals & although I was happy that the never say die WPFC beat the WCEP Eagles Reserves on Sunday I walked out of the gate saddened that this great 130yo WAFL competition that I have followed religiously for the last 33 years was about to embark on the farce that is the compromised Host Club Rubbish yet again not to mention the inept effort from the WAFC in providing the so called pre game/half time entertainment (something as simple as a club 100m sprint or a club long kicking competition was obviously too much too provide)!
Hopefully common sense will prevail in the end but I have my doubts this time around that the WAFC will see the light only the AFL clubs $$$$!
