TFAF, does your idea mean the traditional 8 clubs play 32 games in a season? Am I reading that correctly? That wouldnt work, but...

I admire your persistance with your idea, i do very much like the 10 team format on its own. I have no doubt that is how it should have been done in the first place, rather than the model the wafl have now.

i think if you asked every wafl supporter if they would prefer the new host club arrangement, or your 10 team idea, I would be very confident 99% would favour 10 clubs with no host club interferance. that idea would have actually increased interest in the wafl, unlike now.

my only gripe on your 10 team idea is having the Eagles based at Joondalup. I think the eagles would be better served being based in perth. West Perth seem to have invested alot on time out there, basing an eagles side there would destroy them. Not on.

No - basically the BHP cup ladder that I gave an example of above shows all 10 teams playing the other 9 teams twice. The WAFL ladder is formed from the BHP Cup ladder just minus any games played by Joondalup and Mandurah. Leaving only the points played between the traditional 8 teams. Hence the 14 round comp in the WAFL but 18 round comp in the BHP cup.

I agree seeing West Perth back at Leederville is a big ask. My thoughts about this are that Fremantle are going to have their own base in Cockburn and West Coast are going to have their own base at a redeveloped smaller Subiaco oval once Burswood stadium is made. (I know Lathlain is in the mix for West Coast but I don't think Nissbett and co will come east of the Causeway). Now these two AFL teams will be by themselves and and this leaves issues about what to do about ground sharing.

I think
South Freo and East Freo should share
Perth and East Perth should share

But where does that leave Leederville. It must have two tenants - West Perth is the obvious choice. They will need to be compensated majorly though as WP have done an amazing job.

Who can compensate them? West Coast owning and running the new Joondalup Eagles.

Why Eagles in Joondalup and not Perth area? Because Fremantle and West Coast are the two clubs that can really promote the growth of the great game in these burgeoning suburbs. Not forgeting I am suggesting that WC and Freo have major presence in these clubs. All injured players will have to be at games signing autographs and taking photos with the kids etc. Assistant coaches can be interviewed at half time etc. They can play two games a year at subi before the Derby - Only two though as they must be suburban teams.

I believe if this done correctly each WAFL/BHP cup could get numbers averaging 4000 spectators

TFF good post but cant see it going anywhere. WP are committed to Joondalup now with the 20 million comming the the way of the Arena. (see my post on WP thread).

Troy Pickard has big plans though and even though havent heard much lately I suspect it is still in his mind. Here is the News article on a Third AFL team at Joondalup. Thought it might interest you due to your comments.. Hope it comes up ok on here

Cardy, the Joondalup council will not be happy until West Perth change their name to the Joondalup Falcons.

The Joondalup Eagles will satisfy their desire of a team being called Joondalup.

Now I have heard before about West Perth's consideration of becoming an AFL club - Perth's 3rd AFL team.

My thoughts about this are it would be great for West Perth but BAD for Australian football.

The AFL should only have 14 teams playing the other 13 teams twice (once at each others home deck) for a 26 round comp and a top 5.

This 18 team or proposed 23 teams playing the other 22 is a nonsense for mine.

The AFL do not have to strangle the state leagues they should promote them.

14 teams in the AFL would allow stronger and prouder state leagues.

AFL players should all be on 1 mill a year and have crowds of 50K plus at each game.

State League players should all be on 100K a year and have crowds of 5K plus at each game.

All very possible.

West Perth in the AFL would only every have followings similar to that of Port Adelaide.

The AFL teams should be Super teams SUPER.

Hmm agree with most points.. There are certainly a lot of AFL teams that are not Super at the moment and struggling.. Its like a upper class and a lower class... If it keeps going at this rate they will have to have 2 divisions like Pommy Soccer and teams would be relegated.

AFL is big business and not a Sports organisation. They dont really give a damm unless the money is rolling in. Heard on the radio they are taking grants off grass footy in Vic as well to cut costs.. Lots will suffer because of this.

The AFL is going backwards under Demetreiou at a rapid rate. State leagues are being decimated... and I dont mean that lightly.

Do you remember the Future Directions document that came out in 2006 by the WAFL Presidents.. Colin Rockman WPFC was the president..
In this report the WAFC actually made a profit and all was well.. Here is the full document in Adobe format..I actually read this full report as it covered the WAFC and WAFL as a whole.. How things have changed :( Click this link and save

www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc...vm=bv.51495398,d.dGI

The report said and recommended

Producing a strong, viable competition continues to be the focus of the WAFL and was the ultimate outcome of the 2006 WAFL Future Directions report.
The chairman of the Future Directions Committee was Colin Rockman and the committee included Ken Venables (Claremont Football Club president), Damian Matthews (Perth Football Club president), Cadell Buss (Peel Thunder Football Club chief executive), Peter Capes (East Fremantle Football Club chief executive) and Ken Torrance (West
Perth Football Club chief executive).
Key West Australian Football Commission managers Michael Hnatojko (Director of finance), Grant Dorrington (director of football) and Clint Roberts (football operations) were also involved.
Rele a sed in November 2006, the repor t cont ained 69 recommendations aimed at giving the WAFL and its nine clubs a clear direction in which they can grow and sustain the WAFL competition.
Of those 69 recommendations, 25 were identified as of priority significance.
Those 25 recommendations include:

• That the WAFC immediately inject substantial funding to the WAFL for an interim facilities upgrade-refurbishment for WAFL grounds to be administered by the WAFC facilities manager.
• That the current interstate player limit of six remains as it is for the next three years so that its impact can be assessed.
• That the WAFC make strong representation to the AFL supporting an increase in the National Draft age.
• Enhancing penalty strength for breaches in the WAFL salary cap
• That the colts competition be brought into line with new school year groupings in regards to the upper age limits (eg: players turning 19 after July 1 are still eligible to play colts (the cut off is currently October 1).
• That the WAFL investigate and research any associated benefits and-or issues of closely aligning itself with the AFL brand.
The 2006 report follows on from the November 2003 Future Directions report. Every three years the WAFL establishes a review committee to develop a Future Directions report that will provide the template for the competition to agree to, ensuring that
it continues to remain WA’s elite State League competition.
The professional status of the WAFL competition is due to the outstanding ontribution of the club volunteers including presidents, boards, officials and club management.
The WAFL still has a tremendous connection to club volunteers, they are the ‘glue’ that has previously, and will continue to hold this historic competition together.
The WAFL constantly recognises its volunteers through many different strategies and greatly appreciates their ongoing contribution.

The 2006 club presidents were:
Claremont Football Club - Ken Venables
East Fremantle Football Club – David Miller
East Perth Football Club – Bronte Howson
Peel Thunder Football Club – Mike Wilson
Perth Football Club – Damian Matthews
South Fremantle Football Club – Terry Dean
Subiaco Football Club – Neil Randall
Swan Districts Football Club – Peter Harvey
West Perth Football Club – Colin Rockman

Cardy I appreciate your input. I just really hope that someone with influence can jump on board.

The Mandurah Dockers and the Joondalup Eagles with same song and gurnsey will be much more palitable for people like myself when we see players nourished through our ranks play against us.

For example I can accept McInnes playing for the Joondalup Eagles under the WC eagles banner and song but I could not stand him singing the East Perth song.

Nobody really cares about the traditional eight or the above idea would have more response.

It's not a bad idea TFAF, at least someone is putting something different on the table.

So all up there is an 18 round competition and only the top 4 teams of the original 8 can make the finals.

If we were going to have a ten team comp I like the idea of 18 games. Everyone playing each other twice, one home and one away is the fair way of doing it.

With the finals, in a ten team comp it makes sense to have a top 5 with a four week block of finals. In finals, clubs make more money through higher gate receipts, money spent at the bar and on merchandise etc...

Week 1 Finals

Team 1 has the bye

T2 v T3 (Semi Final)

T4 V T5 (Elimination Final)

Obviously in the second week T1 plays the winner of T2 v T3 and winner of T4 v T5 plays the looser of T2 v T3.

That's one way of potentially increasing the revenue. If say the Eagles or Dockers alignment teams made the finals then perhaps half the money raised could be equally divided between the original 8.

You sort of understand AFL.

But it is a little different in that:

The traditional 8 are completely in their own league (the WAFL) so therefore a top five wont work. They play the other 7 traditional teams twice for a 14 round WAFL season.

But the play extra games in the BHP cup (cheveron cup whatever). These games see them play the Mandurah Dockers and the Joondalup Eagles (both with freo and wc's jumper and song) twice. Hence bringing the total number of games played by the traditional 8 and the Mandruah Dockers and the Joondalup Eagles to 18 games.

The BHP cup would be like the English Premership where the winner is the one who finishes first.

Remembering someone could finish say 4th in the WAFL but top of the BHP cup if say that team struggled against the top WAFL (traditional eight clubs) but for some reason won all four games against Mandurah and Joondalup.

Only 35 new senior players required for this new club Joondalup Eagles as the Mandurah Dockers would have to have a squad 10 less than the traditional 8 clubs. therefore of their 55 players 10 would be dispersed to the traditional eight teams as they would only be alowed 45 players in thier senior squad. Same as the Joondalup Eagles.
