Then why have the rule? Let's face it... this forum would be blowing up if the clubs were switched and Peel lured a talented, in demand, protected player away from South's with false Promises. Peel would be branded cheats, people would be declaring the death of the WAFL and the manipulation of the AFL clubs onto the poor WAFL Clubs. But because it's Peel (public enemy number 1) nobody could care less.

If I were at Peel I'd be throwing the "come play under AFL Clubs noses" tactic at every talented 18 year old south of the river and use this ruling as precedence. Especially on a weekend were 15 Peel players are playing in the Fremantle V Adelaide Crows game tonight giving them massive exposure to the AFL. The door has now been opened... now only the WAFC can be blamed for what walks through it

I agree with TheTrain- shocking decision. Not sure Broadbent gets much more opportunity at the Bulldogs TBH.
I certainly hope that Peel are adequately compensated but how can an arbitrator determine there's more opportunity at SF than Peel- boggles my mind.

I think the kid would struggle to get a regular league gig at Peel especially if Freo have a good run with injuries, there wont be too many spots available, he may not do much better at SF. If he wanted an almost guaranteed league spot, Perth would have been the best option and he would be under the Weags noses all season.

Jackson Broadbent asked Mandurah for a clearance not long after the Victorian drafts finished and then not long afterwards , several other WAFL clubs were made aware of his wish for a new club.
He started training in Collie at the Eagles and he's still there
At least two clubs made firm offers 
After his decision and because of his age immediate contact was made with Mandurah to arrange discussions
These just couldn't work out and Mandurah under their rights preferred to keep him
Jackson Broadbent decided to seek arbitration in an attempt to gain a clearance to South Fremantle
It's the worst outcome and no-one wants to have to go to the big house but that was what he wanted to do

As for where he plays - well given he has been doing some training in Collie at best I'd say he's got work to complete , that's just not a good pre-season belt
He'll have to earn a league game just like all the others before him


 

I take a different view. I think a host club just has to accept this kind of thing comes with the territory. If a player feels his development is being stymied because listed players will be given precedence, he is entitled to move on. Especially as a ruckman where there are only really two positions available. It's a bit like being a wicketkeeper - if you are stuck behind the incumbent, you can wait years for your chance. That's why Gilchrist moved to WA. That said, SF does seem a strange choice if Broadbent's aim is to play senior footy as a ruckman, as compared to Perth, where any tall person who can make a footy spin end over end is an even chance to lead our ruck.
