One of the (rightly) most hated initiatives brought in by the AFL is almost upon us: the mid-season draft. This has the potential to seriously de-rail a team's season. These are the numbers who have nominated: PT - 7; SF - 6; S, WP, SD - 5; C, EP - 4; EF - 3; P, WC - 1. For Perth the sole nominee is Grey, who would have had some chance but for his knee injury. There are some big names from other clubs. If SF lost Schloithe or Sclensog, or SD lost Fisher, or WP lost Keitel, it would have a serious impact. As noted by many on this site, the unfairness of the mid season draft is that WAFL clubs base their planning around the players available at the start at the year, yet still run the risk of having a key player taken away mid season. More galling still would be if WC or PT used the draft. Imagine 42's meltdown if Fisher wound up playing against SD!

Ted I was told if the WCE or Freo pick up a WAFL player in the mid season draft then they have to remain at their WAFL club until the end of that season.
Of course we know the WCER will push the WAFC for that to be changed to help them and the WAFC will no doubt fully oblige.
Also the players have up until May 25 to nominate for this draft so the numbers will no doubt change/increase in the next week!

It should not be a feeling exclusive to Swans's supporters; it should be the same for any club's supporters.  A mid-season draft shows how much contempt the Victorian parasite league had for all other competitions and how lily-livered the WAFC is.

Just imagine if you were a Perth supporter and your best player was drafted ruining your club's chances of winning their first GF in 40+ years.  Even more galling would be if that player spent the rest of the season running around in the drafted club's reserves.

Thanks for that, Beas, I suppose that is one small concession.

The mid season draft makes it tough for the wafl to run a genuine season of level field club v club competition. That makes it hard to attract supporters and members. That obligates the AFL to pay the bills. That means more socialism at the top, ie eagles, tigers, pies cough up their profits to support the pyramid.

I can't see any other way except to let the Wafl and sanfl run seasons with integrity.

Not so sure about that 58, if Strnadica was a draft monty, then surely he would of been selected v SA....surely that was the whole purpose of that early season state clash in some folks eyes apparently?...... good luck to the young fella anyway whatever transpires.....hopefully all those that nominated, weren't forced to do so by those VFL parasites, especially  considering what has happened to previous mid season selected draftees, be a travesty if that was the case.

You’re probably right Freeze, but my thinking was that AFL clubs are complaining about the lack of ruckmen. Strada’s not the worst one getting around.

Definitely mate, has had a good start to the season from all accounts....would of thought those State game selected boys in Gault and Strom would be looked at before Strnadica....but not sure if either those  two boys are even in the nominated 300....that SA ruckman went ok from what I saw of the game.

598 players have nominated for the AFL mid season draft. Of those 83 are from the WAFL
Claremont have 14 nominees
East Freo 12
Peel 11
West Perth 10
South Freo 8
Swans 8
Subiaco 7
East Perth 7
Perth 5
Hamish Brayshaw is the only nominee from WCE reserves

Amongst the better known nominees are Sam Fisher, Frank Anderson, Brady Grey, Tyler Keitel, Cody Leggett, Brandon Matera, Jack Mayo, Declan Mountford, Cody Ninyette, Matthew Parker, Nicolas Robertson, Hayden Sloithe, Jai Bolton, Luke Stradica, Zac Strom and Conor West.
No Corey Gault.
Long odds for most of these guys to get picked up as many teams only have one spot on their rookie lists
