I do recall that one entire family kids and all operated ours at Fremantle Oval as club volunteers for many years during the 1980's - those kids ended up doing some work eventually
Certainly they would have received some form of remuneration and there were no mobile phones back then - just small transistor radios and the kids sent out at quarter breaks to check with the umps if there was a doubt over scores , and then they'd race back over to jump the fence again

Personally speaking, the old manual scoreboards are still the best. Simple and functionality. And easy to read.
Damn shame they are slowly being lost!

STT, not such a silly idea. Would not need a brick wall but two steel posts with a sheet metal face attached with suitable support stays. A busy bee could knock it up in a day .
Problem would be where to locate it.
A more simple idea would be find enough space amongst the perimeter advertising boards for a black board face at ground level  similar to the hurried attempt last Saturday. Problem with that it was a rushed attempt on a white background and difficult to notice or for that matter read.
IMO we would be better off without the existing electronic one which is to small as long as we get a suitable substitute.
