C1 clubs were notified today that due to lack of numbers there will be no panel field umpires provided for C1 this season.

Interesting that no C1 teams have advertised for field umpires on this forum yet.

What would be the going pay rate I wonder?

I suggest it will be hard to find some decent quality club umpires this close to the start of the season!!

It is a simple matter of supply and demand. If you want to increase the supply of umpires then increase the match fee.

For quality Umpires you need to pay $200 per match. Taking into account travel to and from the ground that is $50 per hour. It is peanuts!

Club's should be prepared to pay that rate if it means safeguarding the integrity of their Grade and ensuring they don't have to resort to using Club Umpires, which inevitably cause the disputes and bad behaviour.

Let's face it an extra $100 per game over 18 games is only $1,800 in total each season

Any club can raise that amount surely?

Big Al- u are kidding right?
$200 per game would mean that umpires are being paid more per year than most colts or reserves coaches in the lower grades? $3600 for about 36hours work that is a bloody good wage.

Clubs pay up to $4000 to nominate a side
Most clubs already charge $20 per game per player
Hard to hike up the price of that.

If the ammos want to charge the affiliation fees of up to $4000 for every club there should be some accountability.
Why is the afiliation costs not scaled based on whether or not clubs are supplied umpires?? Eg a grade a Filipino higher than c3 clubs.

Fully understand that Waafl can’t produce umpires it isn’t their fault- they can’t make them magically appear.
Umpires don’t want to umpire because of the behaviour of players/officials on a weekly basis but I think
The issue is the lack of notice.
Hard for any club to find a decent league umpire this close to the season.

Freofortheflag you are kidding right.
The umpires do a full preseason and train twice a week so add all that time in as well.

Heard today that one C1 club has offered $150 to a club umpire to do league

In my opinion A & B reserves and colts should have club umpires so those can be distributed amongst the other league teams, it's more important that league teams have panel umps than ressies and colts.

Why would anyone want to umpire the krud and supporters of any grade below c1. Nollamara? Dianella morley? Why would anyone want ump for or against these mobs. 200 is a good rate for umps

Bangs this is why we need panel appointed umpires in lower grades. Players in those grades will be held accountable for their actions where a club umpire rarely reports a reportable incident.

Be interesting the number of reports/suspensions from lower grades than those of C1 and above.

$150 has been offered to umpires for years ‘Major’. I understand that panel umpires train etc but the Waafl need to help subsidise if they are wanting to pay umpires that much $.
Obviously the higher paid umpires are the more we will have- I am pretty sure we have 297 teams in the ammos this year
297x $3500 (affiliation fee rough cost)
- $1 039 500 in affiliation fees paid to the WAAFL unless I have worked that out incorrectly??
And home teams in panel appointed grades are still expected to pay the whole umpires costs for a game.
3x $150 (field)
2x $90 (boundary)
2 x $85 (goals)
Total cost for A grade league - $800 in umpires for one game

Not sure what clubs pay $90 for boundary. Clubs I’ve been to pay around $50 and goals between $20-$50
