Freezin: Greg Matthews was one spinner whom had a nasty habit of bowlling well at the WACA.

NSW: I think that would be the core of their first side, only one I might include off the top of my head is Geoffry Francis Lawson. I might try doing a second eleven for them a bit later in the evening.

3 batsmen who's figures do the talking for them and should be in the first 11.

Don't rate Reid at all, no ticker.

Am really surprised at Garth's Shield averages. Didn't let down in the tests though.

Freezin wrote: Klinger could be another one to stick in..... considering Victoria have won the last three shield finals and WA shield drought is bigger than EF premiership drought, I am not too sure us WA fans can take the piss out of their lack of cricketing production line.

Anyone care to have a go at naming a NSW side during that time...

Taylor. Slater. Smith Waugh Waugh Border Gilchrist Starc Lee Hazlewood McGrath...
No doubt I have missed a few like Clarke Cummins Thommo Pascoe Bevan etc

Lenny was born in WA from memory making him a WA boy hey AR! ;)
Dev Ken Mueleman was a Victorian who saw the light and moved West in the middle of his career.
Yep the Vics have won a few Shields of late but lets not kid ourselves Freeze NSW would have won 95% of them over the last 20 years if they didnt provide most of our Test team whilst Vic hardly supply 1 member!

BH: 100 per cent correct on the big Croat -- I have been an even bigger fan of his since I learnned the state of his birth.

If we're talking about people whom played for WA with aplomb -- such as Ken -- we should not forget Simpson, as he averagged nearly 80.00 for the state.before buggerring off back east.

Dev: Wood I would have no problem swapping, preferrably instead of Shipperd. Voges got found out against good bowllers so I would not put him in the top side. Mckenzie, as you say, 'Dev' would be in the side but he retirred quite a few years before 1980.

NSW First XI

Taylor
Slater
S Waugh
Smith
M Waugh
Walters/ Michael Clark
Gilchrist
Lawson
Starc
Mcgrath
Holland

A very good side, one lacking only in a top-class spinner. Border left NSW before 1980.

NSW 2nd XI

Mccosker
Dyson
Ed Cowan
Phil Hughes
Dirk Wellham
Greg Matthews
Phil Emery
Brett Lee
Pat Cummins
Peter Taylor
Mick Whitney

That is also a pretty good side, but of course it should be really, given their much bigger population than WA.

Reckon I'd had Stuart MacGill ahead of Dutchy - born in the wrong era with Warnie, but wreaked havoc whenever he got the chance. That's if your looking for a decent spinner though :P

Stuart MacGill is actually a West Aussie and hence is in my WA 1st XI side named back a few posts.

BH: I see he actually played for WA too -- huge turner of the ball, that man, Macgill. Given the conditions of the SCG, it is quite interestting, that NSW has not produced an out-and-out class spinner of its own. The cricket word works in funny ways.

AM was also a very promising catcher with the long defunct Nedlands Baseball Club - receiving from his older, and much larger, and wilder, pitching brother, Nick. All on the Nedlands foreshore.

In those days (late 60s) - and now - cricket was a far more promising career path. He was held back in Perth by a Pommie import by the name of GAR Lock. :)

Surely Brad Haddin would be the keeper ahead of Phil Emery AR?!
A couple of others from NSW worthy of a mention are Jeff Thomson, Usman Khwaja, David Gilbert, Doug Bollinger, Steve O'Keefe, Phil Jacques and Stuart Clark whilst some we would probably not include are Murray Bennett, Greg Dyer, Steve Rixon, Ian Davis, Peter Toohey, Gavin Robertson, Paul Wilson, Moises Henriques, Trent Copeland, Jason Krejza, Matt Nicholson and Graeme Beard.
