While we're into political discussion what about this?
I used to be a pro for Australia becoming a republic, but now I'm thinking why do it? What's in it for Aussies and Australia? Isn't what we have reasonably successful? Be interested in seeing some opinions on this.

I voted against it back in 96 or whenever it was and would again, monarchies are generally more stable countries I would think.

re: The only think wrong in Australia is our useless politicians. Theres nothing wrong with our system of parliment or constitution.

Spot on. Couldn't have said it any better gtrxuone.
The reason I'm against changing from our current system is the fact of change will not benefit ordinary people!
It will of course allow governments and corporations/ big business to jump into bed with each other more easily. Which generally means a bad outcome for the general populous. One only has to look toward European countries like Italy with all the crap and corruption going on there for far too long. The USA has more problems than you could poke a stick at. Anyone thinking serious problems of that nature won't happen here are living on a different planet! Then the question of why change from the current stability to the unstable platform we see happening in other countries, and why others want it happening here. If the current monarchist system were to change, corporations and the wealthy people would do anything to keep the change in place. Even if becoming a republic proved to be a bad choice, it would be far too late to reverse the decision. Another question needing an answer is why change, who is pushing and what is the real reason? The general public can easily be manipulated as has previously happened. Why are politicians too afraid and scared to answer questions on the subject?

yep, he is in the wrong party; although, as we know Grassy, a substantial part of the labour movement would never vote for a republic, even if he was in the ALP. He may blow up the coalition.

Nothing wrong with our current system? What have we had 5 prime ministers in 9 years since Rudd won office? Everytime a foreign leader gets a visit from our "new prime minister" they can't take him (or her) too seriously knowing weeks or months later they could be deposed by their own party because they aren't doing too well in the polls as preferred pm.

If changing to a Republic is going to produce and attract better people to run this country then I'm all for it.

Yeah who the hell would raise this crack pot idea, fair dinkum MT must really need a distraction to go and address this red herring meeting...

and the timing as republic around the world show how crap they really are, South Korea has a mass protest on the streets re a dodgy impeached president, the US has never been so divided re their selection, Brazil has another dodgy Prez that got the boot, South Africa have a mess as well, Italy is in chaos, France is has a Prez everyone hates that has stuffed everything up. it just goes on and on...

The Queen is not hated despised or political and is essentially a benign friendly presence/influence and our Constitution works well, London to a brick a few years after we changed if we ever did people will be saying wtf did we do that for , things were better before, deliver a heap more power to politicians - no thanks.

Let me point out that the current queen has absolutely no qualifications other than the facts that she has born before her sister and had no brothers.

There was never a proposal to adopt a republican system similar the USA or France.

As for the suggestion that "a benign friendly presence/influence" is accurate giver her representative sacked a DEMOCRATICALLY elected Federal Australian Government. Also, glad to see that Bazza thinks that the Australian Senate is working well.

Further I would point out that according to the latest ABS statistics the leading religion in Australia is one that is STRICTLY prohibited from ever occupying the position of King or Queen of Australia.
