I never knew how good he was until I started watching all the old SANFL stuff on youtube. Hundreds of hours of footage on there. Sadly very little WAFL in comparison.

By Gee (One of his expressions), what a player

I was a Port Adelaide supporter in the SANFL back in those days due to having the same colours as Swans when the SANFL GF was telecast live on the ABC.
Ebert was a deadset champion no doubt about it and there were many other great PA players in that era like Craig Bradley, Bruce Abernathy, Greg Phillips, Mark Williams, Stephen Williams, Greg Anderson, Dwayne Russell, Tim Evans, Danny Hughes, Peter Giles, Brian Cunningham, Russell Johnston, his brother Craig Ebert, Dave Granger or as he was known in the SA media Grave Danger and coached by the great John Cahill.

Just on the lack of WAFL footage compared to the SANFL LH I find it very annoying that it was supposedly all taped over but I am then left astonished that old footage like last week for the NAIDOC round of the brilliant Krakouers, Mitchell, Michael, Rioli, Vigona et al in there prime of the late 70s early 80s suddenly appears from out of nowhere?
Someone is telling major porky pies me thinks!

Russell Ebert was a champion for Port Magpies , played a lot of games I think over 400 all told - even had stint very late for a VFL side in it all

Coached South Adelaide but don't know if he played there at the end - can't recall

Won Magarey's & Premierships

Some great players in that era

Ive watched a lot of Sanfl on youtube also LH.Like the old VFL the top sides stayed on top and the bottom sides had the odd crack in the Finals.Glenelg spent big in the 70's and 80's and challenged Port Adelaide !Norwood,Sturt,North Adelaide..
Allways had a massive amount of respect for thoes Sa champions that wouldnt be lured to the VFL with massive offers. And to the whole competition for telling the expanded VFL Competition to get stuffed after seeing the damage to the Wafl.

same thing happened with Peake when he went to Geelong in the middle the 1981 season; apparentlly some of the Victorians referred to him 'as passed his Peake'. On the whole, the man faced a hiding to nothing going over there and being named captain. Just quickly on PA, does the SANFL club still exist or has it been subsumed into the Victorian monstrosity?

Port Magpies were in real trouble only a few years after the Splinter Expansion of a side into the AFL/VFL

Crowds & membership plummeted badly , it's interesting because they've won the most premierships of any state league club - yet Nada since the inception of the AFL side which is the worst stretch ever for the club

What made it worse was the public feud between Mark Williams & Alan (I think that's his first name) Scott who was a long-time major sponsor of the PAFC (both of them)with his company SCOTTS Transport - that stopped dead apparently

Even club legend Russell Ebert went public in his condemnation of the Host Club situation & the effect on his beloved Magpies in the SANFL
