I'm not saying depression doesn't exist as I think it does and in many forms.

What my problem is that it is so publicised in today's society, probably because it was neglected for so long that this sees people have something happen in their lives whether it is big or small and they then say they are suffering from depression.

When this happens people IMO tend to say 'oh that's why he/she did this they have depression.'

And it would also seem that if you have any differing views on depression to the majority you are deemed an insensitive prick.

Yeah BUT 58, these media personalities "love the atttention" and also know what comes with that territory, also they are all too happy to weigh in to the Wayne Careys of this world with sledging and "opionions" ...so perhaps there is another side to it

I work in the health system and its about chasing that big pot of money called “Mental Health”.
Doesn't matter whether its Pharm’s, Quack’s, quasi Medical or Institutions.
Give something a title or find a cause* and they come a runnin.
That's why my first question is; what's their agenda?

*A lot of the “causes” in fact don't have a science base or empirical standards.

Gary was "always" the good guy. He can hang shit on Brownless & Crawford but when the birds come home to roost he screams "Depression" Poor Gary like hell. Just an excuse as he has been exposed to what he is. This has nothing to do with real depression.

Nobody can guess what is going on inside another persons head. We all make judgements about other peoples behaviour based on our perceptions of that persons behaviour and attitudes. With people in the public eye, these judgements are often made on the basis of that persons media or "public" persona which often can be quite different from their private thoughts and actions.

Unfortunately mental health issues are misunderstood by many of the population. There is a stigma about it in that a certain percentage of the population tend to dismiss mental illness as an excuse for behaving badly or seeking attention. Let me tell you that it is very real and you would be amazed at the percentage of people who suffer every day with a condition that is out of their control and that they cannot understand. It is debilitating and creates massive issues for families and workplaces.

I have worked with people who are totally functional and effective in their lives who have disclosed to me that they have been on anti depression medication for many years. None of them have felt comfortable about telling their managers because of the stigma and assumptions associated with it.

Like all of us I have no idea whats going on with Lyon, for all we know he may have been hiding some condition like this for years and that may have driven his behaviour. Some of the comments that have been made on this thread reinforce these assumptions that somehow or other this is not real or just an excuse.
