Young bloke from Subi Shane McGowan I think that's his name, a top 18's player for WA whilst playing league for Subi, a big strapping chb definite afl future sadly fell off the back of a ute became a paraplegic. Mid 90's I think.

I used to play juniors at South Freo with a guy who was All Australian state school boys captain...was the second youngest guy to play league footy for Souths after Stan Magro...had the footy world at his feet and broke his ankle in his third league game I think it was at Freo Oval and never played again....bloody tragedy.

BH...I haven't been given permission by him to put his name up on a public forum as I haven't bumped into him for a few years but he played for Souths around 1975 from memory and his initials are RS. He was a centreman as a junior and through the midfield at Souths. He went to South Freo High, lived in Hilton and his older brother's name was Peter who was our junior under 17s coach...sorry I can't give you any more but without his permission I'm not keen on putting anyone's name on here.

My memory goes back a bit further to 2 good young Subi blokes who were taken in their prime in a car crash in the 60's, Merv Screagh & ... Newton cant remember his first name but the old man reckoned they would were quality players.

Gary Fathers at Subi was cut down by injury.

Gary Fathers!! I think he was from Marist JFC, sort of a reincarnation of "legs" Merrifield, sensational mark but the most awkward kicking style imaginable for a FF.

When thinking of players who were cut down and the list that's been posted, imho the best of the lot would have to be John Todd (already mentioned) winning the Sandover in his first season? as a 17yo he was the most sublimely skilled left footer ever seen. Absolute tragedy when he buggered his knee. He did come back and play with this massive unwieldy American knee brace but he was never the same, reduced him to just a good average player.

The other one from a Subi pov and probably the most freakishly skilled Subi player I have seen (better than Ali Pickett) was Keith Watt, '73 premiership player, would have weighed in at about 60k's dripping wet but there wasn't much he couldn't do with a football. Badly damaged his leg in a prang and was never quite the same. Interesting character who was happier just playing out his footy days at Uni FC with his mates.

How about Bucky's brother Rod I think it was, came to Subi same preseason as Bucky but had a mishap with a weights machine while working out, stripped all of the flesh from both hands & he couldn't grab the pill without his skin splitting after that. Never played a game for us. He was reportedly a better player than Bucky! Fark 2 Bucky's would've been nice we might have finished 7th for a few years
