Bazza -- the crowds in the WI are for a different thread; but very quickly, might I suggest that a number of points: the WI lose all the time; over-priced games; political divisions and so on. For example, T&T wants to play as its own country. The game is growing in the small islands, where there were was good crowds for the games played against Australia.

I agree mate, 2020 has done huge damage, but the only reason 2020 was invented was to pull ODIs; out of the crap as crowds and ratings plummeted, just like ODI the novelty of 2020 will soon wear off and then what will they do - start flogging 10/10 5/5 ...gimmicks.

Crowds at Ahshes series are always going to be an exception, but you cant base the public pulling power of a once every 4 year event traditional rivalry across the board.

Take Aust v SA, Perth has a massive ex pat SA poulation, and apparently passion with Ozzie fans is no less abated than it was in the 80's , despite all that and a now pathetically small WACA capacity they could not even pack it out!

Imagine if it had been Sri Lanka, West Indies, Pakistan??

Meanwhile the Glory are getting 12K and looks like this weekend 15K at games.

Who would of though a home and away soccer game in Perth would attract more people than the WAFL GF just 10 yrs ago!

The times , as the song goes are a changin...

There are lots of reasons Bazza but I don't think people have lost interest so much in cricket. I used to love going to the cricket with my mates and we always had great days at the WACA but things have changed so much in regards to us as adults being able to have fun that we don't bother going now.
4 grown men for the first two hours can buy a round of 4 drinks, by early afternoon now two of us have to go and buy the round, by late arvo all 4 of us have to go and buy our own 1 drink each. Food prices are ridiculous, there is no shade for the patrons unless you are in a stand or a member. The entry prices are ridiculous.
I was a member for 20 years and gave it up to years ago as there simply is not enough on at the WACA. As a smoker I have to go for a 200m walk just to have a smoke.
So why on earth would I want to go there when I can sit at home, drink what I want, when I want, eat what I want when I want and watch it live on tv without any fun police annoying you. Just so you understand I am not a rowdy guy and I like just sitting at the ground having a few beers watching the cricket. They have made to many rules to do that now. Things have changed and we all accept this, but clearly the WACA and more importantly all sporting grounds are going to feel the pinch in the future as it is there ridiculous rules and regulations that keep people away.

I was also a WACA member mate back in the 80's it was all different then and I had some really TOP days there, cricket in the 80s was a really big deal, you could pack out the WACA 32,000 every single ODI Australia v India, Pakis, Poms, NZ and of course the WINDIES were huge in that era,,,

I quit the WACA years ago also. Like many others, shit venue, shit schedules of games plus a boring product, crikey remember thos Macdonald Cup games and Sheffield Finals, they would pack the much bigger WACA out.

All the rules and regulations you outline plus the shit facilities are the same at Subi, yet the AFLers pack it out week in week out mate. But its the main reason I hate going to AFL games.

all gone in a pufff of smoke, people have moved on for all sorts of reasons some as you say the ones above but we live in a more sophisticated society today , broader interests, people are more likely to go shopping all weekend now, or take their boats out, catch waves on a perfect summers day plus multicultural as well people from China and Vietnam and the Middle East have zero interest in Cricket but soccer they love.

I agree with a lot of the above, but would also add the de-regulation of the economy into the mix; increasingly people have had to work on the weekends; the shops are open for people to wander aimlessly around in instead of playing and watching sport.

Everybody agrees the WACA as it is today is run down. As I suggested on another thread why don't the "muppets" at the WAFC join forces with "dad's army" at the WACA and seriously look into ground sharing???????
2018 the stadium will be ready, Subiaco Oval will gather moths, the "muppets" need to look at any $$$$$ they can get in selling the two AFL licences back to the AFL, approach the state govt and Subiaco council to rezone Subiaco oval to residential/commercial and get paid out of the existing lease. Use the combined $$$$ and join ground sharing at the WACA, use money to build stands (shaded dare I suggest), east & west areas will resume their original shape to allow football. Boutique oval to hold 30,000. WAFL finals played there & match of the week which could be televised from there so cameras don't have to be moved and no club/clubs get a financial advantage(oops, forget no TV deal).
Leave the AFL to deal with the govt over running the new Burswood stadium. WACA solves a few of it's problems, maintains the WACA wicket where it is, update the WACA training facilities.
Do it soon before the AFL pinch a line from Kerry Packer....the WAFC "muppets" come along once in a life time.....and we've had ours!

No wonder the AFL treat the WAFC like hillbillies.

Yeh, got me fkd. We (govt included) complain that no big entertainers want to come here, big sporting events are scared to come here and what do our govt/organisers etc do to make it more attractive??? SFA. I think we have this feeling that the mining boom will fix all ills. Guess what...we are gunna get our arses burned big times and soon. Go to a place like Tassie and see what they are doing to stay in the game.

What are you talking about mate, the Perth arena is attracting more big act entertainers than ever, it's just cricket is dieing in the arse all around the world here included, the WACA should be demolished and sold off and they can play Sheffield shield or whatever
cricket at Leederville oval for the 5 people that still go...lol

Cricket is dieing all around the world??? :S
You obviously arent watching the cricket on in India as we speak or went to any Ashes Tests last summer, the Perth Scorchers games etc etc

ever seen the crowds in the West Indies?

The crowds at the Carribean Premier League are packed out i know I watch it and I watch all forms of cricket from all around the world so I know full well it is thriving!
Even tho the crowds weren't massive at the 2 Perth ODI's the TV ratings smashed it!
What about the crowds in India, England, Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka not too mention how many view it on TV, Internet, Radio etc ..cricket is hardly dying as you put it!
