I know it nay be an old fashion show of respest but what has happened that it is no longer done?
I notice it at the Anzac services as well.
Don't get me wrong I am not having a shot at the young ones here,It is all and sundry. It bemuses me that some people of my own vintage don't remove their caps.
Maybe just getting old and grumpy, but it really p!$$e$ me off.

Not old fashioned at all, i would have removed my hat and reckon its because people today just havnt been taught respect, even from my age (39) down, geez i was in my lounge room at home and i stood up during the min silence, it just felt weird to sit during it..some peole are just so far up their own asses that they cant see beyond their next beer or cigartte
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

At first I thought you were talking about hats that Tony used ro wear and I was going to say that maybe they did this as a mark of respect. Similar to the fact that nowdays some people prefer a minutes applause to a minutes silence.

But as you state if they were wearing other hats then these should have definitly been removed.

Whats worse is when they do take their hats off, and put their hat and hand on their heart like a Yank during the anthem on ANZAC day.

What we need is some marketing GURU from KFC Vodaphone or Coke asking em to look under thier hat to see if they are "lucky?" enough to win a years supply of product, im sure all of em will then. I love the way people are silly enough to hold up "FOUR" signs in the crowd, in efect giving the sponsors a lovely free gig. We are run by marketeers NOT old fasioned traditon/respect

I went to Phillip Island to watch Stoner in his last race.

National Anthem came on so the old man and I stood up, took our hats off as quite a few others did in the stand and I over heard someone behind me say to his son that's a stupid yankee tradition to take their hat off.

I nearly choked and wanted to explain a few "traditions" to the fkn peanut but i knew I'd be wasting my time.

Its not old fashioned and its just that plenty of people are too fkn ignorant in this world and people like the dipsh!t behind me have zero idea.

I'm thankful the ol boy handed over the few traditions I do follow.

I agree, you should stand up, and remove your hat if its not part of your uniform. I think that is where the confusion might be.

The hand on heart is an American thing, and its quite noticeable who the Yanks are at the Australian Baseball League games are during the Anthem. They just over do it a wee bit.

on your heart is crap I agree. That's how they teach their kids in schools over there though.

I was taught in school to remove my hat and sing.

I don't think our kids are even taught the anthem in school anymore are they? We use to sing it every morning.

I understand your meaning anchorman. However had I been there standing out in the sun I'd leave my hat on. It's ok for people who still have plenty of hair left but I need to careful of the ol' sunburn factor. It's no fun having no hair I can tell you! Had I been there standing undercover away from the sun or indoors, the hat would have been taken off.

I guess it's all part of the 'progression' of our generations coming through. Some kids today have respect and are a credit to their parents. Unfortunately, the others don't give a rats about their seniors nor where they are heading. As for the hand or hat over the heart...do you expect anything else from a generation that is welcoming our 'americanism'?

AmericaniZing of this nation has been happening for generations. You could even possibly say since the Victorian gold rush times.

Baseball in the 1850's (first recorded game of baseball in Oz was before recorded game of cricket).
Californian Bungalow housing in the 1920's
American ways of life in the 1940's (was more yanks in Brisbane than aussies in WWII)
Rock n Roll 1950's
Vietnam War period in the 1960's
Microsoft and IBM in the 1980's (forcing American spelling).
More American TV than you can poke a stick at - 1990's
snow balled here on in...

It just seems to be more prevalent since the 1960's, however not all young people are easily influenced by Americanism. I think it might be worse in the UK. Not even the Queen can get it right.
