I think like said in another post the days of politeness, courtesy and manners have long gone, it is all abt me!

It is not just the hat thing, it is a general lack of respect being shown towards each other.

I know in my work with the colts please thank u and waiting as opposed to demanding are the norm at training and on games days but not sure that follows outside, hope it does but ...... .

Ur not old fashioned just retro and they always return as trends.

How about Australia Day. What has that evolved into over the last 30 years. When I was growing up in the 60's & 70's NOBODY every celebrated Australia Day. It was a non event. The only day anybody ever waved a flag was on Anzac Day. Our Flag was treated with reverence in respect to those who fought for or gave their lives in protecting our freedom.

Now instead of being a day we celebrate our tenacity, our ability to unite when faced with hardship and those few traditions we call our own, we insist on promoting a bizarre and embarrassing form of patriotism. There is nothing worse than some drunken dickhead draped in an Australian Flag spruiking some incoherent form of patriotism, defiling our national symbols of solidarity.

Quite true. I explain this to people over east that when I was growing up in the west, that Australia Day was a nothing day, not even celebrated. We had Foundation Day.

I must admit, it is strange how it came out of obsurity so quickly in WA, when really it was the proclaimation of New South Wales.

Could it have been Woolies trying to drum up prawn, beer and lamb sales? WA Salvage and their dodgy "aussie flag" shorts and thongs made in China advertised by a pommy dressed like a wog? Or the fact that the fireworks in Perth need to be moved?

I was quite supprised to see the NSW government had gazzetted the Monday after this year as a public holiday. Is this the same in WA this year?

Yes Mike, the 28th January being the Monday public holiday for Australia Day which seems strange to me. I think the so called Australia Day in recent times has become an embarrassment in my opinion. But then again the government is making plenty of money from it. I think society in general has gone down-hill over the last 20 or 30 years. Sad to say!

I think you're spot on there unk. The young fellas at work love the day off, wrap a flag around themselves, get pissed and have a brawl. Other than that, they don't know what the day is all about.
