Did anyone else hear what Percy Johnson remarked on 91.3 yesterday morning in his regular Monday morning review of the weekends footy?
Apparently Perc was chatting to a mate who has a son in the State 18's side this year and they apparently have to kick in $500 for the privilege of playing in our very own State 18's side!
Unbelievable to think you would have to pay for that privilege in this day and age when half of these blokes end up playing in the AFL and you have blokes like Demetriou on $3.8 million a year and some of his executive also on around the 7 figure mark pa, there was a 1.25 billion dollar TV rights deal, the average AFL players wage is close to $300k a year, also not too mention the money wasted on overseas junkets, new franchises, hopeless cases like Melbourne, Footscray etc!!
As Perc commented that may be ok for boys from the private schools & Claremont zone but for single parent families from Midland, Kwinana, Mirrabooka where a few lads in the squad are from that is a hell of a lot of money!
The old working class game of footy has now becoming a game mainly for the elite under the greek it would seem!

That is just disgraceful BH. The game is not supporting its grassroots, instead making a select few very rich

surely if these kids can't pay, then the clubs of these kids could surely find 500 bucks.....call it speculating to accumulate....$500 for a chance of the kid getting drafted for $35K?.....can't believe SDFC couldn't afford subbing some Midland kid 500 bucks to better themselves.....call it development guys......whilst I agree it's rubbish they have to pay, surely their respective club could find 500 bucks, especially SDFC with their BHP connections?

yeah I get the point Mark, but for some stupid ridiculous reason they are.....I am now asking why can't the club chip in 500 bucks...especially when they could get 35K in return...for a kid who has been acknowledged good enough to represent their state for that particular club......

how about those loyal fans of that kids club, forsake a couple beers at the footy one week and put the money towards the 500 bucks needed by these kids.. $8 a can, 4 - 5 cans per person....ease off a pie/hotdog or hamburger for their lunch...thats 40 bucks minimum a person, 12 - 13 fans do it, hey presto 500 bucks!..can't see that happening either?......hard to imagine the selfishness of some folk these guys, let alone the big fat greek and his cronies?

I think because this new business world we live in, seems to be the user pays for everything. Obviously has crept into the sporting world too.

because I already pay over $1000's for giving my sons their opportunity to represent their respective clubs at the NZ national champs for their particular sports ........that's how it is these days sadly....if you want a free hand out, go and beg on a street corner and say 'spare some change mate'

sounds like to me Markie you are one of those fellas who would be happy to whinge about this, but not give up his beers and meatpie to solve this issue.....only trying to provide some alternative resolution here.....more than what you seem to be doing.... or are prepared to do.....just like the big fat greek and his mates.
