look...i think the work he has done with indigenous youth has been fantastic and he is obviously a great role model for young aborigines but let's face it, they make up less than 3% of the total population. i would have thought there's medical researchers, scientists, philanthropists etc who have had a greater effect on more people than he has. in saying that some of the earlier winners like Geoffrey Rush, Ita Buttrose etc were a bit baffling as well.

Very uninspiring speech....the first thought that came to my head was did Eddie Maguire have anything to do with it. Love Adam Goodes, rate him higher than almost all as a footballer and respect his stance and work with regards to racism, but if that's the greatest achievement made by an Australian over the past year then I'm be buggered.

Looks Goodsey is a wonderful footballer and does a massive amount for his community so should have been in the mix at least, but maybe someone like Glen Mcgrath for all his mazing work through the Jane Mcgrath foundation and the considerable and direct effects he & his foundation have had for all Australian women and their families involved in the fight against breast cancer.

I think that it was too soon to choose Goodes so soon after the rascism issue last season, it makes it too easy for some to infer that the decision has some politically correct overtones. Maybe it would have been better timed when he finishes his illustrious footy career.

McGrath would have been my choice.

That is exactly what this is all about.

Fully agree SS -timing is the essence. As you said, many will see this as being motivated by political correctness and thus take away some of the shine of the occasion. Goodsey deserves credit, but have they done this on the back of he destroying a very silly 13 yr old girl? They should have left it for a couple of years...people will be less inclined to link that episode, football and political correctness to the award. Won't add to this...have an opinion and some people pull out the old 'R' card because they don't like what you say!

Yeah, I guess I'm growing tired of being called a racist white c_nt. I get racially vilified every other day in my shop for doing nothing more than trying to prevent theft of goods that I've paid for. I've never once used the word black in dealing with these criminals who continually racially vilify me with no thought for my feelings. Interesting that it doesn't seem to matter or work both ways as I'm white. Work in a liquor store for a week mate and i guarantee you will be racially vilified.

Maybe I'm missing something here being in Perth and not in NSW but what impact has Adam Goodes stance had on mainstream society as of yet. As a couple of others have said a bit too soon and politically motivated.

As an interesting side note I am now no longer friends with somebody I previously classed as one of my best mates after taking up argument with him & his wife after they continually referred to Goodes as 'N_ggerMonkey' to their own delight & laughter during the 2012 Sydney v Hawks GF & in front of their 5yo daughter to boot. The ignorant stance & ugliness they showed and took up argument with, disgusted me & caused to end our 15yr friendship. FYI I despise racism in all its forms.

It doesn't really surprise me. I'm still in two minds on this whole award thing.

I'd rather see someone who we don't know about get the recognition they deserve - a good story that is deserving of who we are as a nation, and not someone who is instantly recognisable because they are good at sport or media personality with a bit of community work under their belt.

I'm not saying AG didn't deserve the award in its current selection criterion (whatever that maybe).

Many Australian's are seeing this day as a glorified bogan public holiday where 19 year old run around with Mexican beer and Mexican hats and wearing flags and thongs printed in good old China, whist others see it as being a little insensitive and out of touch with today thinking.

I can honestly see it being scrapped and put on the politically incorrect pile along with the award. Isn't it more of a NSW thing anyway?!? It would be like the whole of Australia celebrating WA Foundation day.

PS, what does everyone think of this NSW RTA standard issue number plate?
