Australia Day will probably be renamed to Citizen's Day so that it won't offend anyone...FFS!!!! The date doesn't bother me either - it's the day we celebrate being an Aussie.

DW...can appreciate your problem. A friend of my son has the same trouble with his outlet. He even has a repeat offender that gives the bird to the security camera.

Changing it from Australia Day to Citizen Day would be the worst. If you are a Citizen then you are a Citizen of Australia, therefore keep it as Australia Day. Guess people will always find things to whinge about though, so I expect a few more of these things to come!!

I think it should be Australia Day as we're all Australians...i just have some empathy with those who think the date should be changed so it doesn't coincide with the landing of the first fleet.

BC the obvious day to celebrate is Jan 1st when Australia became a nation. January 26th is a celebration of something which had no relevance to the Western half of Australia. A change of name is as meaningless as changing the name of Foundation day here and keeping the same date.

With respect to the actual subject re Australian of the Year I suspect that someone like Gerard Neesham has had a very significant impact over the years at Clontarf but I can't imagine that he would ever be considered for Australian of the Year.

Excellent choice of the date swannie - fits perfectly and includes all Aussies, not just NSW. Gerard Neesham? Now that's one from the left field and he's probably done as much a Goodes.

You would have Buckley's chance of having the national day moved to New Year's Day,, I remember when they tried to celebrate the centenary of federation in 2001, the lack of intetest and underwhelming public response was palpable. Contrast that to 1988 and the bicentenary which was a huge hit, I'm afraid the thought of a few politicians signing a document unifying a bunch on colonies into a federation , is just not as romantic as tall shops and convicts sailing the seven seas and founding a tiny colony on the edge of the world against incredible odds.

As for goodes getting australian of the year ,,,good on him, but if you asked me to name who won it last year or the year before , I couldn't tell you, it means Jack shite to me.
