It is particularly apposite at this time of year (Australia Day long week end) that we give pause and reflect on what Australia Day is all about. Particularly pertinent is that on 26th January 1788 the first fleet (i.e. boats and boat people) arrived at 'Sydney Cove'.

With respect to your particular question screemar I think we should treat people with respect and dignity. We should process then fairly and honourably as we would like to be treated. Further, I don't think we should be using them as political sport for base political gains. Finally, I think it should be put into perspective the numbers of refugees seeking asylum in Australia compared to the worldwide problem which numbers in the millions.

I agree with the highlighted item swannie. Respect is what it is all about. But when you sneak into a house through the back door....this is not respect. When you bring your war torn ideals to my country, this is not respect. When you want to set up laws that come from the 10th century in my country, this is not respect. A lot of the crap that gets here do not have any respect for my country. For a bit of balance, I have a Vietnamese couple and a young man from Sudan that I respect. They have their traditions, but they also want be known as Aussies. That is what respect is all about - respect where you live.

So you are in favour allowing all the boats to land on our shores, no matter what backgrounds these folk come from.

Screemar very succinctly put; where they come from should only be considered in the context of the determination of whether they are refugees and should be afforded refugee status.

58s given Australia Day celebrates 'boat people' of 1788, we have a relatively long period of accepting 'boat people'. The post-second world war onwards has seen Australia accept a great number of people. I believe that over a generation or two the latest 'boat people' will become another part of the mix of Australian society. I would point out that we have such establishments as the Italian Club (and I acknowledge that they give considerably to Australian society) and I think it will be similar for the current 'boat people'. I also note that there are Catholic masses celebrated using the Polish and Italian languages to name just two. Just a couple of examples of what we can expect over the coming 20-30 years.
